Celebratory Travels - Hanukkah

Jointly with the General Support (GS) & the Young People of Color (YPOC) sub communities, please allow me to wish everyone happy holidays and to share the 3rd day of our first co-event with you!
Welcome to day three of our Celebratory Travels tour! (Day one post here, Day two post here). Today we will be visiting the Hanukkah! My name is Anexmos and I will be your tour guide as I take you on a magical holiday journey today!
Hanukkah
Hanukkah is a Jewish Holiday, colloquially referred to as the Festival of Lights. During this time Jewish people around the world pay tribute to a miracle that occurred back in 165 BCE for eight nights by lighting candles, eating latkes, and spinning dreidels and much more!
Facts about Hanukkah:
✧ The Hebrew word Hanukkah means dedication, which can help to explain the meaning of the holiday, in a way.
✧ During the eight nights of Hanukkah, people light a candle in commemoration of a miracle. The Maccabees, an army of Jewish rebels, conquered the Syrian-Greeks, who had outlawed Jewish religious practices and disrespected the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The Maccabees then rededicated and reclaimed the Temple, and although they only had enough oil to light a lamp for one day, the oil miraculously lasted for eight.
✧ Hanukkah has its own set of customary foods. To celebrate the holiday, people fry foods in oil to acknowledge the miracle of the oil. These foods may include latkes (potato pancakes), sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts), kugel (noodle or potato casserole), and gelt (chocolate coins).
✧ The holiday is based on the Hebrew calendar, so there’s no set Gregorian date range for Hanukkah. While it always starts on the 25th day of the Hebrew month Kislev, that date can correspond to anywhere from late November to late December. This year, Hanukkah will be celebrated from the evening of Thursday, December 10th until the evening of Friday, December 18th.

I do celebrate Hannukah! I love all the family time and time off from school and all the fun events and parties and yummy food and gifts and it's just a good vibe haha

I eat donuts because they're yummy and the rest are kinda just too much oil
♡ If you were to explain Hanukkah to a friend who had never heard of it before, what story would you tell?
I would tell them that we celebrate Hannukah because we had a miracle in the olden days with the Greeks where we fought a war and even though the Jews were the minority they won and therefore we celebrate by lighting candles and eating good food and having fun

I would get most or it wrong if I tried to go into detail. but I would say it is tradition passed down from old times

I am loving the food items you mentioned. I personally love oily and sweet foods. Pancakes ,donuts, sweet toasts sounds yummy.

Hanukkah means dedication. A long time back some people fought to restore the faith of the holy temple and lit a candle which miraculously lit for 8 days and that's why it is celebrated for eight days.

♡ If you were to explain Hanukkah to a friend who had never heard of it before, what story would you tell?: Hanukkah is a Jewish festival commemorating the recovery of Jerusalem and subsequent rededication of the Second Temple at the beginning of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE. It is also known as the Festival of Lights.
