That life is fragile and finite. My father died before I could meet him, and his absence taught me that we can only live as best as we can, with what we have, for as long as it possible. Because some day, some random hour, in an unexpected second, all your plans, your thoughts, your projects and outlook for the future will come to a stop. It is not on our hands, or on the hands of those who love us, to live or to die. Just like we come into existence without willing it or thinking it, so do we cease to exist.

My mom has a prognosis of three to five years of life tops, and right now it looks to me like we might not even get that. She tells me and my siblings, every day, that this is normal even if to us it seems like a disaster. That our bodies are fragile and imperfect, so a lot of things can happen to us. There is no meaning to it, there is no lesson to be learned, no courage or dignity to claim. It's just how biological matter works. We live, and then we don't, and that's normal.

My mother taught me courage by example. Wasn't anything she said or did it was how she lived her life .

I wrote this on the anniversary of my parents' deaths:

*Ten things my mother taught me*

1.Nothing is personal.

2.Have adversaries, not enemies.

3.If you love someone, say it loud and clear. Hug them as much as possible.

4.Be nice to your uncles, you'll need a place to crash when you're sick of me.

5.No one has even gone poor by sharing with others.

6.Have an opinion for everything.

7.Be gracious in defeat, even more gracious in success.

8.Your friends might not be expected to know when to shut their mouths, and their B-'s might be ok with their parents, but this is an Asian household. Proceed at your own risk.

9.Other people are not props in the act that is your life.

10.If the emperor looks naked, its because hes naked.

*Ten things my father taught me*

1.When youre drunk, drink two large glasses of water before going to bed and you wont have a hangover.

2.The past is always with you.

3.Know your privilege.

4.Sharing meals with people you love and with complete strangers is wonderful. Do it often.

5.Always dress appropriately for the occasion.

6.There is no lie under the sun you can come up with that I haven't thought of already.

7.Sexist/racist jokes are never appropriate and only funny to assholes.

8.We are as strong as the weakest person among us.

9.It is terrible to love something that death can touch, but you should still love as intensely, sincerely and truly as your heart permits it.

10.Good dancing = good sex.

To stand up for what I believe in. To be a leader and not a follower.

@Misoup

That advice is good only for children. That advice does more harm than good to an adult.

@llychee Kind of the same. The only thing you can do now is that when/if you have a family, you can choose to not make the same mistakes they did. You can choose to be a better person than your parents.

How not to be a parent. I've done everything possible to be almost the exact polar opposite of the parents they were. And I'd like to hope that I'm doing much better at it.
