20 Signs of a Narcissist or Psychopath
Readers,
We've all had unstable relationships in our lives, but what happens when this instability becomes plainly harmful or abusive? The following article examines 20 Signs or Symptoms of a Narcissistic Personality Used to Silence You:
These types of people often exude shape shifting, goalpost moving, and destructive expectations for their loved ones. Additionally, emotional degradation and name calling are not unusual. Often you will see circular reasoning, a casting of blame, and repetitive attacks on your interpersonal social circles affecting your sense of community, reputation, and selfhood. Despite your best efforts to meet these expectations, communicate your needs, or take accountability, these people will continue to find reason to be dissatisfied in their relationship with you. They will attempt to control and manipulate the actions, thoughts, and feelings of the other person. When this sense of control is lost, hypocritical tantrums are often the result. This is important because when abuse and threats are no longer verbal and become physical- we are putting ourselves at risk for grave consequences. This happens more often than you might think.
Please read the above article and share which situations you have experienced in your personal life. How did you react to this? Or- perhaps some of you are currently entangled in this type of relationship. How do you feel about what you read?

What I find so interesting is the internet is filled to the gills with stories of my ' crazy ex borderline girlfriend and how I escaped ' type stuff, but while BLs can be a handful with such emotions and instability, BLs are so filled with love and wanting to give it, I don't even think a severe need for love is even in the ballpark with a sociopath/psychopath who has no conscience, empathy or love for anyone except themself. Shudders.
@SHEAINTGOTNOSHOES
Well said. Indeed, those with mental illness are statistically more inclined to be victims than perpetrators of violence. This might be the one exception.

Excellent and intuitive point well delivered. Im BP with Antisocial traits, and yes, im a hot mess sometimes due to PTSD, Major Depressive and Anxiety Disorders that are consolation prizes Uncle Sam provided that co-occur with my Personality Disorders. Ive been called a Narcissist by actual Narcissists!! Thats what scares me about this disordet, is the affected are almost convinced by the afflicted its they who are the pychopath or sociopath!! I know this, Narcissists are extremely intelligent and that makes them truly dangerous, as the sick person is convinced youre the one who will suffer the consequences of the sickness they have inside their mind.... and more often than not are successful in cloaking their nature in your acceptance of the lie they sold you.
@courteousVillage7719 Soooo true. To the Nth degree.
This is my married, adult son, to a tee.
Him and wife and 2 babies were living with me and my 18 year old daughter. But things got real ugly and ended with my son being arrested for criminal damage/domestic violence, and his wife leaving my house with the babies. I dont know where they are,other then all together somewhere in town. I've had brief exchanges with my son. And its probably best to keep it that way right now.
Hes just a very angry young man who believes I am responsible for most of his problems. He definitely has that sense of entitlement thing going on, is manipulative, and a proficient liar. When he was sitting in the back of the cop car, the officer commented to me that he was very cooperative and respectful and seemed like a very nice young man! Then he came in and took pictures of all the damage my son did to my house!
I didnt feel I was in physical danger from my son. The only reason I called police was in the hopes of getting him psychiatric help. I've filed 2 petitions in the past to get him picked up and evaluated but police couldnt find him (he wasnt living with me then). He has been ordered by the court to attend a domestic violence diversion program. Its a group setting and I dont feel it is the answer, but at least its a start.
I know this will take time. I'm just very sad that my family is so broken right now with the holidays coming up.
I dont know much about NPD. My main question is, what caises it? I also believe my son is bipolar.
@undefinedcoldasice
For you, my heart. I am a mother too. My son is only six, but of course these are our biggest fears as parents. My mother is a disgnosed narccisst. I believe it to be environmental and biological. It is so much more difficult when children are involved. Stay strong lady. Thank you so much for sharing your story. I hope you continue to find support here.
I attended ASilentObserver's Session about NPD and relationships last night and Obs shared the link to this article and thread. Sadly it isn't new information and I have lived through this article in the first person. I have been and am grateful for the support from the 7Cups community in escaping this life and realizing that there comes a time to move past such a person. When you can read an article and identify with every part of it, it doesn't relieve the pain but points to having to move past it. All twenty points me and my dogs suffered in terrible fashion, I am aware that such people are so self absorbed that they are never wrong but you are their blame focus. Giving up hope on someone you love is never easy, but they have to love you back enough to see the damage they are doing.
@blitheSun94
never seen something so accurate...
my ex in a nutshell. Fortunetly I'm now working on my trauma by having therapy sessions.
Everyone that has someone like this needs to cut them our of your life. You deserve better
@Booklover95 I'm currently still with my boyfriend and he's a narcissist and I don't think he's ever actually sorry for the things he does and aays he can't trust me and acts like it too. Constantly checking messages and everything. However everytime I tell him to get his things together and call his sister to get him he calls her and says not to come I'm just over reacting and being crazy and I don't know what to do anymore. I can't get him to leave and he says if I want him to he'll walk but wont go to his parents or anything, just that he'll leave and a whole mess of stupid comments and makes me feel terrible and apologize for saying anything in the first place..
@Lostandconfused013
That's a narcissistic. They never admit its their fault (because they really believe is not). He'll always manipulate the situation, turn it around and make it seem like is your fault.
He's dating you so he knows your personality and "weaknesses".
Trust me, run as fast as you can...
@blitheSun94 I was in a relationship with a narsissist and it wasn't easy. I managed to get out and heal because I reached out for help and others gave me strength to be myself again and say "Stop. Goodbye.". It wasn't easy, but it was necessary, and I'm happy it's over.
How do I know what my husband is? I have caught him in many financial lies or manipulations of financial facts. If hes put in a corner he looks like he feels horrible about it but otherwise he may or may not apologize it may or may not seem sincere. And small defense, following kids health issues and lifes traumas I am not observant of all of our accounts and I do not like being on a tight budget. I find it taken care of myself – no shopping spree‘s other than food – is most important at the time. And that time has gone on esp since One of our kids has a lot of anxiety.
My husband and I have gone to a counselor for almost 2 years or more? She has helped some
this is very interesting. I'm not entangled in this type of relationship, but it is very interesting to read and open my mind about psychopath and narcissism. thank you!
