Is it possible to have empathy for someone but not love them?

This is a fascinating question. 🤔 If you do not love someone, would you be able to empathize and truly care for them? Would you be able to love someone that you empathize and care about? 🤔❤️

This, of course, would depend on your idea on what love is, what that means to you, and how you express it.

My belief is that in order to truly empathize and care for someone, you have to love them. 🥰 Its really that simple, but people in todays world keep mistaking romantic lust nonsense for love, which it clearly is not in my opinion.

Otherwise ... how could you truly empathize and care for another if you have no love for them?

Yes, one can show empathy without love. Strangers are capable of empathy towards people they don't know until the moment of need. Look at the world crisis situations- esp weather related ones.

Great topic.

I agree a lot of it depends on your definition of love and empathy. My personal opinion is that I like to have a very broad definition of love and empathy, so I can love people I haven't even met if I hear their story and feel compassion for them.

An interesting twist to this: is it possible to love someone without empathy?

Is it possible to have empathy for someone but not love them?

First of all, there are different types of love. I have learned this myself over the years. . . I mean I do not see eye to eye with astrayed family members, but I still love them.

Second, there are alot of times, my empathic ways are more situational for strangers and I don't have extreme love.

I have extreme empathy for those I really care about. It doesn't mean I do not have empathy for others.

@AbbyHarris1976 I'm going to have to say that you can feel empathy for people you don't love and just because you love someone doesn't necessarily mean you'll empathize with them either.

I think it's possible but most people might not find it easy to do. It's possible to empathise with strangers or people who are going through a tough time even if you don't know them or love them. You may not love them because you don't know them. But I think it's quite possible. Though, one might not be able to empathise as well as they would with someone they love.
