Key For Strong Relationships!!

User Profile: ASilentObserver

Ello Wonderful Mates, Hope you all are well.

I was just going through the various posts and I found that most of us thinking how to build our relationships stronger and better? So, thought to share some thoughts on it.

Relationship not only just romantic relationships. Relationship is a spectrum. The relations we make and develop throughtout the years with family, friends, colleagues, siblings are also really important. Our relationship has an influence on our happiness and health. Better our relations, better will be the joy and health and vice-versa.

So what's the key for a strong relationships? Communication!! We all know it. Right? But, are we effective in our communications we make in our relationships? Lets pause and think for a minute.

Probably, most of us would think I try to communicate better but other side might be misunderstanding it due to which communcation isn't effective. So where could we find this key?

Communication is a two way process. It is not like you expressed your part and its done. Its also about knowing and understanding what coming back to you after you expressed. We also need to learn what other trying to respond to your expressions and what they need?

So what could we do? Here are some ways I hope we can find better to have effective communication in any relationship you share with anyone.

No one is a mind reader. Unless you are specialized in reading minds, you can't say what's going in other's head. Neither you nor me. We aren't trained experts on it. To know what's in other's head, you need to let them speak and to let them know, you have to speak out what's going in your head. Maybe you think you expressed it but did other person also got same what you said? Think and pause. Take a break and ask them out, "what are you thinking?" Miscommunication happens. But it could be minimized if we seek response and reflect on what you understood or what they got it. So, probably may be upset over something but to let them know you are upset, you have to speak it to them.

Listen actively. What does it mean? a person talking to you and you are lost in your wonderland. Come back from wonderland and listen what someone trying to express to you. Unless you not listen them actively, you won't understand and if not understand, communication wouldn't be as effective as it could be. Apply Active Listening. Be in the moment with them and communicate.

Use Sandwich Method. Many times we just find a complain or a mistake and reach out to them and speak it as it is. Lets rewind it and think what if same one do with you. Point your mistakes and flaws directly to you. It feels bad. So, make use of sandwich method. A way to let them know what you appreciate in them and what they could improve upon? Seems more approachable and gentle. Isn't?

Let your actions also do some communication. Actions speak louder than words. You not only have to communicate through words but also put it in action. It will build trust and understanding that what you say, you do as well. Doing care will let them know actually that you care for them.

So, what are your thoughts on this thought? What do you think? Share with us and let's discuss

@ASilentObserver Thank you so much for writing this article! There's a lot of good information in here and I'll let others focus on it, but I'd like to point out how happy I am that you introduced active listening skills as part of the keys to a strong relationship. Again, it all ends up at the Communication Boulevard, but active listening is a Bus you have to take to get there.

I so support your statement that says "Actions speak louder than words!" I also believe that we should mean what we say and say what we mean! First one shows loyalty and the other honesty/open communication. There are other factors that contribute to strong relationship, however for me, these are the most important ones. No loyalty, honesty or open communication - I cannot imagine the relationship to move in the right direction. - Speaking from my personal experience

Everything was on point really. Very good advice and explained. I will say though I didn't fully get the sandwhich method? I re-read it 3 times and nothing so maybe is my english failing me. Could you explain a bit better?

@Booklover95

What Silent Observer meant was that sometimes we find another person's flaws or mistakes they made and we have a tendency to point out directly to them. We can imagine how we would feel if someone else would come to us and make such comments about us - how we do this wrong or how we could have done that better, so forth. Another approach that we could use in these instances is being open but non-judgemntal, but instead encourage them to improve and support them towards this in the process. Constant critisim is never effective, yet positive reinformeces always works. As the sayins goes ''The world is changed by your example not by your opinion." I hope that has answered your question.

I agree :)

@Booklover95,

I can just point out here that "putting yourself in somebody else's shoes" is a huge sign that you are showing empathy for these people.The difference between "sympathy" and "empathy" is exactly this: with sympathy you are just displaying it but remain an outside observer of people and events while with empathy you somehow become part of the situation yourself and in a way experience the person's emotions of pain,hurt etc

Hey Book! Good to see you. Thank you for the kind words.

Sandwich method consists of praise followed by corrective feedback followed by more praise. In other words, the sandwich feedback method involves discussing corrective feedback that is sandwiched between two layers of praise. Squishing the criticism or pointing mistakes between praises and compliments to have a better impact on the other person so they accept it openly.

Appreciate this thread and focus on communication. I agree most esp with action. Some of us can communicate until were blue in the face and even hire people to get us to agree to do things differently. Unless we do them we waste a whole lot of time. Communicating and understanding or a big part, however unless we make them a priority and remember them, we can really wear other people out.😔

In regard to pretending were in the other person shoes: I try to imagine my husband is a little boy. It does help me to be more compassionate. However I really dont want to be married to a little boy LOL

@ASilentObserver

Well said.. 😍😍😍

True, Yeah we can't read someone's mind so first we should try to express whatever we feel about that person or whatever is going on in our life.. This is how the person start trusting us knowing that We don't hide and there are chances that the other person will also start sharing about his feelings... Time and space is much needed in the starting . . This is how the trust develops between the two person ...

🌼If the person loves you will understand ---this line we always come across.. But it is half truth I believe... Unless until we don't share about our feelings and express, the other person can never understand.. So both should express... The more we express and listen to the other person more is the chances for better understanding

We should express and listen too..

I totally agree whatever you have said.. And thank you for sharing this kind of forum posts.. This is actually important ..as it will help us to understand that how we can improve our relationship and what all steps we can even take from our side to make bond more stronger..

@ASilentObserver,

Concur,actions should match words because otherwise it shows there is a problem with the person's behaviour, you start experiencing the so-called 'cognitive dissonance" - a term which basically means your mind is trying to process and alert you that there is something wrong with the person who tells you one thing but does something completely different.I hope I am explaining it in a clear enough way,I am not a therapist,just interested in such topics.

@ASilentObserver,

You are welcome!I am glad I am a part of this community ,having the opportunity to share my experiences and thoughts in the hope that I can help others relate to them or I can find something I can relate to.It's a long way to go healing our inner self and recovering from past hurt.I guess everyone here is on their own journey but it helps when you know you are not alone in what you have experienced and there are people who care to listen to and talk to you about it,not judging you,j just accepting you the way you are - someone willing to work towards personal development.

@ASilentObserver Thank you for writing out such a great post! I completely agree with everything you have to say. This is quite great advice as it will help build and sustain relationships of all types. It shows a person how much you care for them to listen, understand, and give them well-thought-out advice and feedback as well as encourage them to do the same for you whenever you need them to listen.

Great post! I really value communication as a key point to every relationship, however it isn't my partners strongest point and he prefers avoiding it :/ Lately I really have some things I need to get off my chest and discuss with him because I'm afraid my thoughts may go over the edge and reach a point of no return if I don't. Tomorrow I'll try and talk with him so I truly hope he'll be open for it this time and I'll keep these tips in mind :)
