My Boyfriend And His Mum Clash

Ok, so recently my boyfriend has seemed pretty down because of his relationship with his mum. They seem to argue and his mum can escalate small things pretty quickly. She calls him a brat and sometimes tells him that she really doesn't like him. This not only makes him feel down but when it comes to confrontation he rises to it which just makes it worse. I want to help him be able to talk to her calmly but she may react badly and I was wondering if you have any tips for situations like this, to help keep him calm. I just want to help him.

Hello, @woolfiee

It's so nice of you to want to help your boyfriend in the relationship with his mom! :) Managing anger when the relationship is generally very tensed and full of frustration is really tough and requires a mature and self-control based approach. Have you discussed it with him? If you did and he understands and is determined to act with more calm next time I'd suggest he could maybe start with some meditation exercises to practice profound breathing a reconnect with his inner self a bit. This would help him in those moments when he's triggered and about to stand up to her, you know, just breathing and repeating himself that after all his mom is just a human being which is not perfect and makes a lot of mistakes, but he understands there's not much he can do to change her and fighting with her can't really bring anything good. So basically mentally restating the fact that "I can do better than that, I can understand and act more mature than she does". That usually works pretty well in my case :)

I hope it helped a bit and I wish you the best of luck with everything! Take care

@cloudTraveler Thank you so much! I'll show him this and help him find some meditations. ☺️

@woolfiee

Would you be comfortable role-playing with him? You could come up with some potential (calm) responses to the sorts of things she says and he can practice saying them out loud. You could take turns and model some things he might say. Sometimes it's really helpful to have the words at the ready when you're emotional or upset.
