@River oh wow river....this is a really good timing for this topic to me. i ve been thinking about it the past few days if i should talk to my boyfriend about it or not
First of all, Should you talk about your past relationships with your partner? Why or why not?
honestly, i think that communication is the key - but only if you feel comfortable telling them and if you feel like it does still have an impact on your present and/or future!
@Hope3729
Hey! I am glad the timing matched for you! And communication certainly is the key but being comfortable for sharing is really important and sharing enough not to harm your relationship certainly will be the wise choice
@Hope3729
I totally agree. I'm very lucky to not have a jealous partner so we are very open about our past relationships. It can depend on the partner though, some just don't wanna know.
@AveryLove
Absolutely. I think this depends a lot on whether you and your partner are committed to a long-term relationship and (as you said) talking about it in light of what you've learned and how you want to grow from your experiences.
What a great question! I think it depends on the context. If it will be helpful for them to better understand you or why you act a certain way then it might be valuable. If it is to make a comparison that is negative to your partner, maybe don't do it.
Agreed! I think this is very true, if you think something good can come out of it, then it might be a good idea to mention it, but never to compare! I also think that you should not be expected to share that information if you prefer not to!
@Jill7cups
I would say No if you are making an unfavorable comparison ("Why can't you be more like that?"), but yes if the comparison is favorable and there is something to learn.
I personally think you should because both parties in the relationship are already thinking about it
And communication is key, it's important to share your past with your partner it shows a form of trust as long as you keep it as what it is instead of always bringing up your exes then I think it's very important
I think that it's a risk one should take if they plan the relationship to be serious. Last relationships give us extremely valuable information and sharing it with your partner shows them how you trust them with more delicate subjects and you can also figure out together how to not make the mistakes again. It's a good way to bring elements you liked in your past relationship in the new one. Any partner who really truly cares about the well being of the relationship will see this as an opportunity to find out what you like and what should be avoided
I think yes but only if your current partner asks but what happened in the past with ex's should just stay in the past cause you and your current partner are the future doesn't have nothing to do with your ex's ,, my fiancée asked me what happened if I had a ex I said yes but my fiancée said it won't effect us he just wanted to know cause due to my ex he caused so much health problems than my fiancée understood why I had breathing issues and noticed my ribs pushed inwards but it never effected my fiancée and I I don't really like talking about my past cause its more hurtful and violent than just health problems I think only talk about ex's if there's something wrong and alarming that you should really need to know like is he or she isn't a killer or a stalker to make sure your house won't be broken in to or to make sure there not violent so you won't be worried about your partner while your at work or away for work for few days there's so many things that some current partners want to make sure that there partner is safe from ex's some partners ain't worried but some are
@BrightRedFlower2322
Talking about it when your partner asks is a great way of approaching it. I agree that past should stay in past. I am glad your partner was supportive to you while talking about the past relationship. Talking about it when situation is alarming seems quite necessary too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts about it.
No you shouldn't ever, unless it was bad and left you emotionally scarred then you should so they can understand what you are going through.
I don't think there's much need to in normal circumstances. But when it comes to mental problems and dealing with a lot, sharing information about your past relationships can help the other understand you better. And help them avoid things that have gone wrong in the past because of those problems. But I think it's really individual and depends in both partners of the relationship. So I doubt there will ever be a universal right or wrong to this good question.
@River To me, communication is key in a relationship and so is being open with your partner. My boyfriend and I talked about our past relationships quite early on in the relationship (with me having more past and awful relationships than him). It was hard talking about it and it was hard for him to listen but he wanted to. He wanted to know every part of me, inside and out and we talked about all our past relationships (avoiding going into greater details with some), we laughed together and we cried together. It definitely strengthened our relationship ever since
Should you talk about your past relationships with your partner? Why or why not?
I definitely have talked about past 'relationships' with my boyfriend, because of past experiences that I had that I didn't want to occur again, so being able to communicate that with him was wonderful.
If yes, what might be the perfect timing and perfect way to approach it? And how much do we wanna share about our past relationships without harming the present one?
Because my past relationships weren't great, I don't bring it up often and the only time I ever really do is when we're talking about boundaries/what I do and don't feel comfortable with!
