advice about parents and my relationship
Hi! This may seem silly, but I don’t know where else to look for advice. I’m 23 y/o and I have had an amazing opportunity to move across the country for a great job. My partner also 23, has found jobs in the city we want to move to. I was excited to tell my mom about my job, and mentioned my partner was probably moving with me. She started to hurt my feelings by saying negative things about them…things i would’ve never thought about them. I truly believe my partner is a good person with pure intentions. I have been successful in my life by myself. She said things like “not having a good gut feeling, that they’re just ‘okay’ and that he comes from a dysfunctional family and that’s going to reflect on my relationship, that she would have more respect for him if he let me go for 6 months and then move in with me, also that i can’t ever do anything on my own” my partner and i currently live hours away and rarely see each other. i believe i am an independent person with a supportive partner who truly brings happiness into my life, but after speaking with my mom i have been feeling a lot a doubt. wondering if my moms words are true. does she have a better instinct than i do? this is really starting to alter my thinking and i don’t want it to affect my relationship. I’m not sure if it’s okay to not have my parents approval at my age. They still support me financially since I am in school and I feel like she could be holding that against me even though I never asked for help. If anyone has a similar experience, i would appreciate your advice so much.

I totally get it. I had a similar situation when I was dating a guy that my mom felt was not a good fit for me. It turned out she was right, but honestly, I had to learn for myself. It took some hurtful experiences and some heartbreak to finally see what she saw in the guy. But the bottom line is that I had to do what I thought was right, otherwise, I would have resented my mom and felt that "what if...: my whole life. Now, I can say, "you were right", but I got to that point from my own experience.
I guess what I am trying to say really is that you have to follow your heart and figure it out. It might be wonderful or it might be the worse decision ever, but as long as you are ready for whatever the outcome is, that is what matters most. We live and learn the hard way sometimes. But I wouldn't change it one bit.
Sending you vibes for clarity and peace ❤️
