How to realize you are in a toxic friendship

Hello everyone!

I've wanted to share a problem I am experiencing.

So I have this friend, we were friends since middle school up to high school. and this friendship has been pretty bad... is all I can say. we get in a lot of constant arguments, he so often blurts hurtful stuff but never realize it's actually hurtful.

I can't spend more than a day with him without getting all angry and stuff. and that make me feel toxic honestly. but I don't seem to feel this way toward any of my other friends. He forces me to do stuff like keep nagging me until I ask him how his day went or keep coughing until I ask him what is it or (one of my least favourite ones) keep talking to me and expect me to listen to him while I am either on the phone or doing a task like reading a book or talking to someone else. he also always get down on my body and weight no matter how hard I am trying to feel slightly good or confident, I end up feeling like a piece of trash with him. It feels like I can't do anything while he is with me and it's always about HIM and it's draining and tiring. I can't ever talk because then he backlash me and make it all sound like it's my fault.

This is driving me insane but in the end I'm the bad guy for feeling like this. frown

yeah don't be with people who go out of their way to make you feel like shit lol. a friend commenting on your weight is never okay.

@dworth257 Yeah he is very manipulative. Whenever I try to enc the connection of our friendship he keep nagging me and talking to me and always say how horrible I am for ending a friendship like that or that I'm an attention seeker until he somehow start talking regularly normally to me again.

@communicativeBalloon8100 also just let it go, deff don't try to get revenge or something like that. i've known people like that. maybe try to tell them DIRECTLY and PRIVATELY that they've been drained with ya and need space. don't get other people involved, except on here !

Hey there, hopefully you are doing well. There's a few things I would like to point out;

I've wanted to share a problem I am experiencing.

So I have this friend, we were friends since middle school up to high school. and this friendship has been pretty bad... is all I can say. (I can see this friendship is making you feel bad for awhile now, so Im wondering whats leading you to keep the friendship going? Is it a fear of loneliness? or him making you feel guilty?) we get in a lot of constant arguments, he so often blurts hurtful stuff but never realize it's actually hurtful. (The way he blurts hurtful stuff can definetly making you feel hurt. He has been doing this often, so it shows he is not willing to change and its indicating me he is not being considerate of how this makes you feel)

I can't spend more than a day with him without getting all angry and stuff. and that make me feel toxic honestly. but I don't seem to feel this way toward any of my other friends. He forces me to do stuff like keep nagging me until I ask him how his day went or keep coughing until I ask him what is it or (one of my least favourite ones) (This feels like your friend seems to behave very entitled and selfish. He is making this friendship all about him and his needs, while treating you as an object to soothe himself. He doesn't understand the concept of mutuality, and is showing he is not emotionally mature) keep talking to me and expect me to listen to him while I am either on the phone or doing a task like reading a book or talking to someone else. (I can tell he can't delay gratification because of the way he never got his needs met growing up. He will behave very impatient and selfish in an attempt to force you into doing what he wants to avoid feeling anxious. This is not the kind of people you should be around because you will always feel drained and frustrated since its all about them) he also always get down on my body and weight no matter how hard I am trying to feel slightly good or confident, (This must be quite hurtful for you to hear every single time he starts talking about it. I don't know if he is over-weight or not, but if he is theres a chance he is projecting the things he doesn't like about himself into you. He is also not accepting you as you are, so its important to be around people who uplift you and are positive to be around) I end up feeling like a piece of trash with him. (Its understandable its making you feel this way when he has been doing this for awhile. I highly suggest to stay away from him because his words and actions will cause a negative impact on your self-esteem, mental health and self confidence) It feels like I can't do anything while he is with me and it's always about HIM and it's draining and tiring.(It definetly feels like you are trapped and having a difficult time being yourself while being around him. There's a high chance this is how some people may have treated you growing up, so it feels too familiae for you. You deserve to be around people who treat you respectfully and put consideration on how you feel. He only cares about himself, and those are the kind of friends that should be blocked because they will only hurt you) I can't ever talk because then he backlash me and make it all sound like it's my fault. (You are doing the right thing in standing up for yourself. He can't handle criticism and has a hard time accepting responsability, so he shifts the blame on you on order to keep you small. He is very manipulative and selfish. He will try to guilt trip if you end the friendship, but in reality its impossible to be around someone toxic as him)

@freshLight64

You got all of that right!

I didn't really keep the friendship going, whenever I tried ending it or talk to him less he still talks to me anyway and always ask questions that require answers and it's extremely uncomfortable when he is standing very close just waiting for me to answer even tho I have no interest in the conversation.

He isn't overweight, which is why he treats overweight people poorly. I am not overweight either I'm just a bit chubby. I used to be overweight but as the time went I did lose a lot of weight but he still thinks I am the same weight and It's annoying me, really annoying me because I worked hard to lose everything and to build a proper self-esteem and confidence. I just really hate him at this point.

@communicativeBalloon8100

I'm really really proud of you for working so hard everyday to lose weight, you did an amazing job. I do feel like there's a chance you are not setting boundaries with this person, and he is also not respecting your personal space and time. What will you do?

@freshLight64

i just thought about avoiding him. I tried setting boundaries before. I get into a huge argument with him about what's okay to say and what's not. But I think I'm better off avoiding him.
