In a friendship for the wrong reasons
A few years ago, I cut off a toxic relationship with an autistic woman and her mother because the circumstances were not healthy. In fact, I am still hurt about how things went in this "Friendship." In fact, they didn't really like me.
That said, I realize that myself and these two were in that relationship for the wrong reasons. For starters, I am also mildly autistic. Therefore, we both felt obliged to be friends because we are both autistic/disabled because it's been hard for us to make friends. Especially the other autistic woman. Still, we are not compatible on so many levels,
1. Her autistic traits were much more profound, which impaired her maturity level.
2. Her family members and I disagreed about disabled people's abilities
3. All of us had different personalities
4. I am in a very different place in my life than they were

It sounds like you have really put a lot of time and energy into this friendship. Taking care of yourself is important too and I like that you recognize that and have started that journey.

Now that you put it that way, I did without realizing it and I became really attached to them. I also tried to make it work. Still, my relationship with them was very toxic. For one thing, my former autistic friend lives in a dysfunctional family and she's treated like the black sheep. Just about every time I would get together with them, her mother was always telling her to be quiet.
Meanwhile, neither my autistic friend nor her mother seemed like really liked me. Some examples
1. My friend was always cutting me down or making me out to to be this really bad person
2. There were other several occasions where she would be mean to me for no reason, while she was nicer to my other friends
3. Her mother always put on a fake front to me face and then would criticize me behind my back about that I have a disability and I should not be doing this or that.
