My Favorite Uncle No Longer Loves Me
My whole life, my favorite relative has been my uncle Jay. Jay happens to be gay. Jay is also my godfather. He lives across the country and only visits every few years, so his visits are very special to me and I always look forward to them. A few years ago, I was in a same-sex relationship, and suddenly my gay uncle wanted to chat all the time, and wanted me and my partner to come stay with him and his partner where they live for vacations, and it was cool that we, as the only two queers in the family, could suddenly bond over something. But when I left that partner for being psycho, the messages from my uncle stopped, and I thought he must be busy.
He made his visit this year and I was so excited, I asked him to meet me for lunch with my mother. He didn't talk to me the whole time, except to make a negative comment about my attitude (by the way, that "attitude" was me saying I couldn't order a dish I wanted because I was allergic to one of the ingredients). He and his husband went back to my mom's house, so I went with them, thinking perhaps the restaurant was too busy and they would talk more to me at home, but they ignored me still. We all met up for dinner, and I brought my best friend for support because I was already beginning to feel unwelcome. And not only did they still not talk to me, but they were whispering about my friend, and their expressions were not friendly.
I just don't understand, I think my uncle doesn't love me anymore because I'm not 'gay' anymore. I'm bisexual. I was in a same-sex relationship before, now I'm dating the opposite sex. I just feel like, he's rejected me becaus he thinks I'm not gay anymore? I'm still very gay, but no one ever asks. No one ever asked in the first place. He also made some comments that day that made it sound like my aunts (who disliked me already for seriously no reason other than they don't like my mom) had told him a bunch of lies about me. I hate it. It isn't fair. I've been facing a lot of rejections lately, in all aspects of my life, but this one hurts the most. I had always thought we were secretly connected. He likes the same books as me, and he's fun and cool, and the only other queer, and he hates mushrooms, just like me. But he's made it pretty clear he doesn't want anything to do with me anymore. He obligingly came to see me and my mom out of familial obligation, and then he disappeared again, right back to the aunts that hate us. My family is stupid. Every single one of them is petty and loathsome.
I just wanted to share this since it's been festering inside me and my chest has been tight for days over it.Thanks for listening. I think I'll be ok. Sometimes it's better to let go of people who don't want to be in your life. That's fine with me. It's just going to hurt for a while :(
