Should we be friends anymore?
Hello, first off I want to say sorry for my poor English it's not my first language. I have a friend we've been friends for almost 8 years now and for the past year I've been thinking about our friendship. I feel like the only reason we're friends now is because of our mental illnesses and how similar our lives are. We both suffer from social and general anxiety and depression. Because of our mental illnesses we need someone to talk to and we turn to each other for for support/someone to talk too. However she's not very good with words or her emotions and so because of that I feel like I'm giving her so much support but when it comes down to me needing someone to talk too she can't help me. We've talked about this before and she said she really does care for me but I have this gut feeling like intuition that sometimes she really doesn't care about my feelings and what I want to talk about. I feel like I'm having a one sided relationship and I'm being used. Whenever we hang out/see each other in person something doesn't feel right to me. We're awkward when we see each other in person and sometimes we barely talk to each other when we do hang out. Sure we do have fun and laugh at times but still something doesn't feel right to me. It feel like to me this isn't what a friendship should be like.

I dont think there are right and wrong types of friendships as long as they are healthy and both people desire the friendship. You have invested a lot of time into this friendship and that can complicate things, but being friends just because you were in the past wouldnt be a good enough reason for me personally. I love that you try to be there for your friend. Youre right, you also need a friend to be there for you. If you value the friendship, keep talking and trying to work things out. You can change other people so you have to ask yourself if you are willing to accept your friend and the friendship as it is right now. It might change in the future but you will never be able to force it to be what you want it to be.
