Struggling with starting the friendship

So there's this guy and he's really cute and really nice (and I think I might have a crush on him) but before I date him or anything I just want to become friends with him, but we don't have any classes and we don't hang out in the same friend circle. We've texted a few times but I've always started the conversation and then kept it going. What do I do? If I keep starting the conversation is that clingy? Please help!
