What DOESN

A lot of people ask what matters in a friendship ... but heres what DOESNT matter to me in a friendship.

Age, for the most part, doesnt matter. I have always tended to get along better with those older than I. My friends across the street in Michigan, where I lived before living in Chicago, are old enough to be my parents. I think there might be more of a difference between some of the values of my age and the younger generations, however - but that should not significantly hinder a good friendship.

Religion doesnt matter much - Im Catholic but have gotten along well with nondenominational Christians, Muslims, and others.

Likewise, race and ethnic group does not matter to me. Through the years, I have gotten along well with those of different races / cultures / ethnic groups and still seek out friends from different backgrounds.

Ive been blessed, and fortunate, to have had friends from around the world. My best friend C here in Chicago, who is currently battling cancer, is originally from Jamaica. Im going to her place today after work for a visit, and well likely order in for dinner.

My friend going through middle school and part of my freshman year in high school back in the day was from India. She had to move with her family out of town later.

Im part of a MeetUp group in Chicago which meets for coffee every Saturday afternoon and people of all ages from all over the world that have moved to Chicago attend. 🙂

For me I also don't need to talk every day. Sometimes I haven't spoken to a friend for months and then we get together and it's great to catch up. School was definitely a major factor in socializing but as an adult I've found that I'm mostly okay with not seeing or even talking to my friends on a regular basis. It doesn't always work (I recognize not a lot of people are necessarily the same) but it's just the way I am.

@ReadBooksDrinkTea

Thats opposite of me ... I probably talk too much. 😂🤣

The most important thing is supporting them when they need it, even if you cant physically be there. I dont think MA in Austin will understand this (ehen I opened up to him about my best friend Cs condition), so I am not going to try to reach out to him.
