Can trust ever be gained again?
If a husband and a wife go through something that gradually and totally destroy trust between them, knowing they've had an exceptional relationship and they went through a *** of a lot together, can trust be ever present again? I'm totally devastated

I am going exactly through what you are saying.
My idea is that something had gone wrong long before it came up on the surface.
I think it can but it's never going to be the same as it was. Now suspicions will be questioned without hesitation and things may be misinterpreted along the way.
Emotions are going to run really high for a while, defensiveness, guilt, sadness, anger. It's par for the course.
However if two people are really transparent moving forwards, clearly communicating what they need to move forwards..
Exactly why this transgression occurred in the first place, willing to admit blame on both sides, to do whatever it takes over time to mend things, then aside from dealbreakers, there might be hope.
Good luck with it and I hope you get the desired result :)

Yes, trust can be reestablished it takes a long time and requires some hard conversations.
I have been through my partner with alcoholism/ financial issues caused by that and other issues. we did not always deal with it as well as we do with things now. When trust is broken, we really do need to peel it down to the core of issues. I feel many have band aids if surface level healing, but it just lets the deeper wound fester.
It is also conflicting because we have told ourselves "I would never tolerate X, Y or Z" but find out when we have to face a real-life issue, things are not so clear. We do not want to share as others may judge our decisions or give advice like just leave because they are not invested in the situation.
it takes growth on both sides and some changes. I think of breaking a item we can glue it back together and others may never know it was broken but when we look, we see where the crack of the repair is immediately. takes time to see the item without just seeing what was broken.

Excellent!
I could feel how painful to be disappointed in a trusted relationship.
Check it out
Two are wrong , will continue to be wrong
One is wrong, the second is right, either of the two, who see the loopholes and make amendment will restore the lost hope.
Not only helping himself/herself of devastating but also restoring joy back home.
Be the one...
