Complicated grief

I’m struggling with a situation that has left me feeling heartbroken and stuck. After my longtime partner passed away, I began a relationship with someone who was helping me through my grief. He was in the process of ending his marriage and was driving to move to my state when he experienced a severe psychiatric crisis. He voluntarily admitted himself to a residential mental health program and, based on the information I have, recently completed about 120 days there and transitioned to a step-down house.

Right before he entered treatment, he told his family that I was a scammer. I believe it was said in panic, but I don’t know exactly why. Worried about his safety, I reached out to one of his daughters. That made everything much worse, and since then I’ve had no communication with him for four months.

A few days ago, I sent one final message letting him know that I forgive him, that I hope he’s doing well, and that I’m giving him the space he may need. I’m not looking for anyone to tell me what he’s thinking or whether he’ll come back. I’m here because the uncertainty, the silence, and not knowing if he’s okay have become emotionally overwhelming.

I’m hoping he’s OK but not knowing has been incredibly difficult.

@TheToll

it is incredibly hard when in a friendship / relationship online or where we are waiting to hear back from someone.   It is the NOT knowing are they OK is it over the uncertainty makes it hard to move on if needed.

The idea they dismissed the relationship I think is common if they were in some way exposed.   I think it may be a panic move have seen with a couple of people who developed a relationship with someone online.

Thank you. I think that’s exactly what’s been so difficult. If I knew he was okay and simply wanted space, I could respect that. It’s the not knowing whether he’s okay or what happened after treatment that’s been so hard to carry. Also, I would like to know that this wasn’t just an online relationship. We’ve met in person multiple times.
