@Benniestark

Hi, about 6 months ago I got out of a bad relationship with a person who had narcisstic tendencies - I've been in therapy and I'm a lot better. So what I would recommend reading is 'codependcy no more' even if you aren't codependant it is incredible at describing how to set boundaries and the process of how hard that may be.

My grandmother is a narcissit as well, (or atleast has tendencies) and it's hard to have childern around people like that,it's hard to exist and try to be...human but that's up to you on what you and your family is comfortable with.

I would have a conversation with your husband for both of your families and what you're comfortable with and what you're not,from there set boundaries. It's not your job to keep everyone happy,and it's also not your responsiblity to take care of anyone elses feelings.

Boundaries are important in every relationship,you just need time to figure out what yours are,and they probably won't be the same for every reltionship and it's okay if you need time to figure that out.

I'm really proud of you for how you're trying to handle things, it'll be okay

@Benniestark

That must feel really lonely to be on your own with someone in your life that doesn't support you.

My wife had the same problem with my mom.  She was among other things, was quite manipulative and narcissistic, and did what she could to interfere with my marriage and relationship with my children. I finally ended contact with her, which was the only way I could protect my wife and kids from her toxic behavior.

My wife had me to protect her, but you're on your own.  That has to be really hard.  Often when family members are forced to deal with difficult relationships, they find themselves questioning their own personhood and integrity, as though maybe the problem relatives (in this case, your in-laws) has a right to manipulate, interfere, or do things to diminish self-esteem.

But you're facing this problem all by yourself.  You really do deserve support from your husband.  I wish you had it.  How often do you talk to him?  He may or may not be able to influence his parent's behavior.

It's important to realize that you're a good person who deserves courtesy and respect.  If you don't receive that from your in-laws, they are the problem, not you.

I've found it helpful to remind myself of my own value and intentions, so I can be at peace with myself, even when others try to take that peace away.

Feel free to message me if you wish.
