Did I make the right choice? If so, why do I feel so bad?
I dated. my now ex. briefly when he was pursuing his 2nd career. We broke up then.
Years passed, he made sure to keep in contact with me by texting me throughout the past few years.
I moved to another state (let's call it state A) to go to pursue a 2nd career myself, I've been here for the past 2 years. Moving from my home state to State A was hard, not just because I had to leave behind friends, family, and my dogs, but because moving my stuff was challenging, things got stolen, or broke. Thankfully, back then, I didn't have nearly as many things as I do now.
He graduated and moved to state B a few months ago.
We both visited our home state in July (2 months ago) and reconnected. To returned to state B before I started classes in State A. We started talking to each other daily, then it turned to video calls, he bought me a ticket to visit him in State B while I was still visiting family in my hometown.
While I was visiting my hometown my dog, got pretty sick and needed emergency surgery. He's still not completely out of the woods as they have to check him for cancer. He already has a whole team of doctors and my best friend (who works at the animal hospital) working with him.
My boyfriend asked if I was seeing other people, and asked me to be his girlfriend. He told me that if any other guy approached me I should say he was my boyfriend. He made me practice saying it. Now I don't know if he was being funny or controlling.
When I visited him, in State B, I told him how beautiful his town was. I mentioned that I understood why he moved there, and that I could even picture myself living in a place like that (something I often say casually when I travel to places I like).
He introduced me to his coworkers.
I graduate this December, my career requires me to get a license to be able to work, but by law I cannot take it until 1 month after graduation. I registered to take my license exam in State A last semester.
He began sending me links to how to change my career license from State A to State B. He then sent me multiple links of apartments he had been looking for me (I had not asked him to do either). I began to feel pressured and overwhelmed. I also noticed he never offered to help me look for work, or help me move a whole apartment, or anything, he just pressured me into moving.
He then bought me plane tickets to spend new years together in State B, and a few days ago surprised me with another ticket to go see him during my midterms. I was thankful and excited to see him, but the trip during midterms made me very anxious about my studying and getting distracted, which I said to him, but he said it would be good for me to take a break.
I asked him when he would come to visit me in State A, but he says it's easier for me to travel because he doesn't want to leave his car behind. I invited him and his cat, but he said that would be too much stress for the cat. I'm highly allergic to cats, but I know how his cat is important to him so I showered that cat with love and attention. She's pretty adorable too.
I thanked him for his effort on looking how to transfer my license and looking for apartments, but I explained that State A gives me better options as a new grad and I wanted to get experience, and build my skills. I said that I was flattered by his excitement of having me move close to him, that I would like to see him more often too, but that right now we are just starting this relationship and I just can't pick up and move. I mentioned how it would be hard to move without a job to support myself. I also mentioned how I was very concerned about my dog's health and that if he's very sick, I would have to return to my home state.
His reponse shocked me, "I waited for too long already, now you want me to wait for your dog's health? If you can't find a job in your career path, you can get a job as a receptionist. If you are not here by January, we are over."
I told him I was feeling pressured into moving for him, he said he wasn't pressuring me, because I should want to move.
Needless to say we are over, but I'm deeply saddened and still shocked by his ultimatum, and the fact that he still wants me to visit him during midterms.
I thought we had similar goals, I thought we liked each other and would be able to support and respect each other's paths.
I even asked him if he would move for me if I was the one asking. He said "no, unless the relationship is more stable." I said, "exactly, it wouldn't be fair to even ask you that, it is too soon."
I truly believe that if I would have given up everything and put myself through the stress of moving to yet another state, on my own, just for him, I would have resented him and I didn't want to ruin the relationship like that.
Now, I'm looking for work in all 3 states. It all depends on my dog's health. I'm willing to move, I'm just hoping to do it at my own pace.
@GlassHummingbird1100 it sounds like you have and are approaching this in a mature and rational way and that you have healthy boundaries and expectations.
Things can be hard to see when we're so involved. From what you have written, I see several red flags in his behavior, so I just want to reassure you that it sounds to me like you have made the right decisions so far in sticking to your path and not rushing into anything.
I wish you all the best in navigating, and congratulations as you continue the beginnings of your career.

Thank you so much for the reassurance and kind words. When I saw a video of my dog going into his appointment with my family and my friends friend supporting him... I felt horrible for not being able to be there, but I knew picking him is the right decision.
I just can't deny I miss my ex. Overall he is a good guy, but since he got his degree and his cat, he's turned more introverted and selfish 😥. He told me he was pretty new to waiting and that he had not dated anyone for more than 1 date, since 2019. I don't understand why waiting a few more months Hurst him this bad.
@GlassHummingbird1100 I am glad that you know you have made the right decision and have confirmation. Unfortunately, it does sound as if he is being selfish, and that is something only he can change. I wish you all the best with this <3

Thank you for the support. Honestly, school has kept me so busy, I don't go out much. I was feeling lonely already, by just having to do school 24/7 and being so far away from my dogs, friends, and family.
My last conversation with him left me shaken up. A friend told me about this community yesterday and I'm so thankful. Thank you so much for your support.
You are absolutely correct, he's the only one that can change his perspective. I just miss our daily video calls to check in.
For now, I put away the picture of us he sent me a while back, and in it's place I bought myself a bouquet of bright orange roses to try to brighten my days.
@GlassHummingbird1100,
do things at your own pace, for you, never for someone else.
His behavior is not healthy. He doesn't owe you, he can't arrange your life for you.
There's a lot of red flags in his behavior. Seems like he wants to control you and make you act as per what he wants.
You deserve better.
