Do You Think We "Owe" Our Families Emotional Access?

I’ve been reflecting on the idea that family members often expect us to be emotionally available to them no matter what, even when it drains us. For example, being the one who listens to everyone’s problems, but not having the space to share your own.

Some people say, “That’s what family is for.” Others believe that setting boundaries is just as important with family as with anyone else.

What do you think? Do we owe our families unlimited emotional access, or is it okay to set limits? How have you handled this in your own life?

@LanaAfterDark I don't think it's selfish to sometimes put our needs above our family.

We all feel burned out at times and they should understand, it's not always a good time to talk.

In the past I've sacrificed my peace to help or support family but it's rarely appreciated/reciprocated so I end up resenting them.

@LanaAfterDark

I do NOT believe we owe anyone unlimited emotional access,    Setting boundaries is essential.

In reality we get to chose friends ... family just happens.... setting boundaries especially if it is only a vent.   i set limits on time to vent/ rant etc and if they kept doing same thing but expected different results to tell someone else.
