Don't Do This vs. Please Do This
Our counselor gave us The Five Love Languages to read. The emphasis seems to be on asking for what your partner can do for you. What about what you wish your partner would stop doing? For me, the list is much longer, but I feel toxic bringing it up. I'm easily irritated and annoyed with people I live with, and I know it comes from being smothered by my ex. But my son and I can live in the same house and just allow each other to do our own things and we get along great. Can I ask this of my partner? Just leave me alone?

In reading your post my guess is yes.
If the emphasis is on asking a partner to do things for you........ then we can ask in a supportive way can I have x amount of alone time ... especially if there are certain times you need more space.
Same would seem to apply to ask for things like not doing things that aggravate you. I feel any effort if spoken in nice terms can ask for things to make changes for both partners.
