@Kendallj28

I believe that everyone should try to be a friend, if they can. After all, we all need a friend from time to time. And to be there for someone is a great gift.

But of course it is more complicated when it is an ex. Are you sure that you are going to be able to maintain the boundary between friend and something more? Are you sure that your ex is going to be able to respect that boundary?

It sounds like you might be feeling some guilt for his problems. This is understandable, but suggests you are already struggling to maintain boundaries. His problems are his problems. Might he be trying to make them your problems? A friend is much more supportive if they aren't trying to take responsibility for someone else's problems.

So I think it might be important to get it clear in your own head what you can and can't do in this situation.

Or what you want. Are you hoping the relationship will be rekindled? What was the reason you broke up before? Has anything really changed? Or is there lots of promises of change?

What was he doing with his ex? Why did he even put himself in the position of her being able to hurt him? Is he bouncing between the two of you? I hope not, because you deserve someone who wants more for you than to be the one who picks up everyone's pieces. But it seems to me that there are lots of unanswered questions, that you might want to establish before going further, particularly what you both want.

Take care and best wishes.
