I feel like my marriage is good at times then he has a switch when he gets angry or upset it isn't as bad as it used to be I know he loves me but sometimes it doesn't feel like he does when his anger comes out or when he makes the comments that he does when he says he's just joking

It is passive aggressive behavior. I feel it is what some do because they did not learn good communication skills. Love and respect even if we believe it is there needs to be shown and when it is not, it is lonely.
The good times seldom make up for the times when a partner is mad or " just joking". if you can reach him tell him exactly how he makes you feel so if you need to leave .... he cannot say he does not know why.
