I lost the most beautiful thing in my life. How to live with my guilt?
Hey everyone.
I don’t even know why I’m writing this anymore. Maybe because I’m tired of carrying all of this alone in my head. Maybe because I need someone neutral to tell me if I’m crazy, delusional, loyal… or just broken.
Her name is Ana. We were together for two years, and she wasn’t just my girlfriend to me. She was home. Her daughter Sara became part of my soul too. I didn’t just lose a relationship — I lost the future I had already emotionally built in my head every single day.
It’s been months, and my life still revolves around them even though she already moved on emotionally. My apartment is still full of our pictures. I kept everything. I listen to songs that remind me of her almost daily. I replay memories like they’re sacred rituals because I’m terrified of forgetting even the smallest detail.
I told her I would never have another family.
I told her my hope would never die.
And the scary thing is… I meant it.
Since the breakup I’ve tried to become “better” in every possible way. I train hard in the gym. I take care of myself. I work. I function. On the outside I probably look normal. But internally I feel like someone paused my life while the world kept moving.
I still think about messaging her constantly.
I still analyze every conversation we ever had.
I still wonder if she misses me in quiet moments.
I still imagine impossible scenarios where somehow we find each other again years later.
And what hurts most is that I know love alone isn’t enough. I know that if someone truly wants to leave, you can’t love them into staying. But my heart refuses to cooperate with logic.
I don't want don’t want someone else.
What if part of you genuinely believes that person was your one chance at feeling complete?
I know this probably sounds unhealthy. Maybe it is. But I can’t lie anymore and pretend I’m healing normally. A part of me stayed with her and Sara, and I honestly don’t know if I’ll ever fully get it back.
I don’t even know what I’m asking from this post. Advice? Perspective? Someone who understands attachment this deep?
I just needed this to exist somewhere outside my own head.
Hi @FadingSoul00.
You sound like you love hard and your sentimental.
I suffered a similar fate. I was obsessed with a women for 23 years. I would have dreams at night every day. She became the person in my head.. I could not escape from her...
Are we normal fadingsoul? Who knows..
Take it easy fading soul. Your gonna be ok..🌟
@FadingSoul00
I hear you, and I am so sorry you are carrying a weight this heavy. It is completely brutal to have to put on a normal face for the outside world, go to work, and hit the gym, while your chest feels completely hollow on the inside.
Grief from a love that deep doesn't care about logic, and it doesn't care that she’s moved on. It is incredibly painful to know deep down that love can't force someone to stay, while your heart still begs for an impossible second chance. You are allowed to feel broken, you are allowed to miss Ana and Sara, and you don't have to force yourself to "heal normally" on anyone else's timeline. Just take it one day, or even one hour, at a time.
Thank you for this… honestly. I don’t even know how to explain how much these words meant to me.
Lately I’ve been feeling like I’m carrying this pain completely alone while trying to act normal in front of everyone. Going to work, going to the gym, talking to people, pretending I’m functioning, while inside everything feels heavy and empty at the same time.
What you wrote hit me deeply because it feels like you truly understood what this grief actually is. It’s not just “missing someone.” It’s waking up every day with guilt, memories, regret, and the constant feeling that you lost something irreplaceable because of your own mistakes.
And the hardest part is exactly what you said — love doesn’t force someone to stay. No matter how much your heart screams for another chance.
Thank you for reminding me that I don’t have to heal on anyone else’s timeline. Right now even getting through a single day feels exhausting sometimes. Your words genuinely made me feel a little less alone tonight.
