Sometimes relationship stress is the buildup of little things left unsaid. What’s one small thing you think couples underestimate the impact of?
Sometimes it’s the smaller things that slowly pile up over time- feeling unheard during conversations, not expressing needs clearly, unresolved misunderstandings, changes in effort, or even the things we convince ourselves are “too small” to bring up.
Those little moments can quietly create distance without either person fully realizing it.
What’s one small thing you think people underestimate the impact of in relationships?
It could be something positive that strengthens a relationship, or something subtle that slowly creates stress over time.
In general relationships I see a lot of non communication, instead of someone saying, Listen I'm currently trying to process something, I may not be as talkative/available..
People go silent and the other person is left to guess, what did they do? Why am I being ghosted? It builds anger and resentment which could easily be diffused by firstly stating, give me some time please, nothing personal.. But I need a bit of space, thanks for understanding.
Because when they come back and act as if everything is fine, it makes it worse. Oh you were ignoring me for no reason? Well great.....
This been a situation with me and my gf. I always shut down and she think i being dismissive. I need to work on communication because she love to hear me talking

It’s a really tough cycle. When someone shuts down, they aren’t trying to be cruel- their brain has just hit a wall and they literally don't have the words. But for the partner left in the dark, that silence still feels like a total rejection.
@listeningyouout29 I'm guilty of it too. I get overwhelmed and can't find the words or I'm afraid I'll snap at someone so I retreat.
But sometimes I'll say I haven't figured it out yet but when I do I'll share a snippet

Listening with understanding, nothing is more dismissive than telling your partner something have them fake listening and later could not tell you what you said if their life depended on it. That along with assumptions about what I felt or thought. This has created a divide where me and spouse are only close roommates anymore.
In talking with several divorced friends, it was always the small things that finally killed the relationships. Even the big things started from the small things.
@toughTiger6481
That sounds painful, especially because being unheard over time can make someone feel emotionally invisible in their own relationship. When listening becomes surface-level and assumptions replace real understanding, the connection slowly starts fading without either person fully noticing it at first. Feeling more like roommates than partners is something many people quietly struggle with, and it often starts exactly the way you described.
