If someone is self-medicating and closed off.

When marriages are falling apart, I found trying to put myself in their shoes.

For some reason couples even, long term does not communicate well.  My spouse went thru something, and I did not get it until I was in similar shoes.  I wish I could have a do over of years of conflict now that I am able to see what I was not able to in the moment.
