What will my future hold?

Need honest advice. This is a lot and complicated, but here goes. 4 years ago we decided to have an open marriage (bad choice 0/10 don’t recommend), something occurred during one interaction leaving the other hurt. The hurt individual retaliated by cheating 1x on a trip away shortly after. This was 4.5 years ago. Couple did reconcile, marriage counseling, stopped all awful interactions with others. Since then the person who cheated out of spite has been emotionally abused, treated poorly, not aloud to have friends, nights out, is basically controlled and continued to be punished. Person who was cheated on does not see this way and feels that other should be remorseful forever and needs to forever repent and follow the orders. Cheater feels they’re trapped and not living a life. Basically bad decisions all around which we’re very aware of, but does someone deserve to live in a punishment for the rest of their life? Should that person ever be free to live their life as they choose while still living their partner or should they walk away?

I feel that people shouldn't live their life out being punished.  Forgiving and leaving the past in the past is more appropriate. 🌲

@lifeinabox33,

sounds like a pretty toxic relationship. Nobody is allowed to control your live. Choose you.

The door was open to something bad happening when people talk of opening relationship.

      It does not seem that partner has gotten over a cheating episode. Not because the episode but instead the hurt and items around it.  It does not sound like this was resolved in marriage counseling.  Maybe they thought they were over it, but they were not.   I think people have to have a real reckoning about what was going on at the time of this happening.        It is not about blame it is about understanding all the stuff that led to stepping over the line.
