Hi all,

I’ve been having some trouble lately around my boyfriend drinking in our relationship. It’s not like he’s drinking a serious amount but I’m trying not to be overly critical of him just laying back and having some fun. He maybe has 1-2 beers a day after work. Has anyone struggled with this in their relationships? I know some of it is overcoming trauma and realigning my thoughts on it but it’s definitely hard when I see it as a negative thing to drink and he sees it as a way to relax. Any help or experiences anyone can share would be great:)

this is an important issue. drinking can be a risk, but if he’s drinking one or two beers a day, it’s not an indication that he has a drinking problem. On the other hand, it’s not too healthy from a physical perspective. It’s time for you and him to have a frank conversation. Maybe you have some emotional baggage related to this which needs to be talked about. At the same time, maybe he can reduce his drinking to make you more comfortable but ahah for his general health. I think this is a perfect opportunity to find a compromise in the middle. This can also be good for the relationship by showing you two that you can problem solve together.

Hey there, I have gone through times in life where I enjoy drinking but realized I never really had a healthy relationship with it. For the past few years due to personal trauma anytime I drank it just led me to a dark place never happiness but just thinking depressive so I just cut it out because I thought there is no need to take myself to a dark place, I get there enough without chauffeuring myself there. Whereas my boyfriend has a healthy relationship with alcohol. He never has had an issue of like drinking excessively really to an unhealthy mental state so I don’t think he can relate nor has he seen a family member struggle with that. He wasn’t working during the pandemic but now that he is he will have a couple beers after work and it kind of irks me he does that because it just doesn’t seem necessarily good for you in my opinion. But a lot of that is more my personal traumas and what I’m going through so I’m seeing it through the eyes of that. But as long as your partner has a healthy relationship with alcohol there really isn’t something to worry about per se, it’s not like he’s going out drinking and driving home drunk or hanging out at bars. Which I know is exactly what my bf would say if I tell him it’s bad because before that was something I worried about: him going out and getting drunk and not having a safe way back home.

i suggest if you have personal trauma related to alcohol you have to work through that yourself or else you will kind of put it on him instead of healthily dealing with it.

That said if you feel it’s not like him or he’s just taking an easy way out (is maybe mentally stressed from work and needs to talk k about it but drinks instead or he’s trying to mask physical pains instead of treat them at the source) then talk to him and tell him you’re just concerned he’s not taking care of an issue and you want to be there for him
