Childhood trauma
I was recently broken up with and although I realize that it wasn’t my fault even if he blamed only me, I realized how much my childhood trauma effects my relationships, not only with him but with every one. I tend to have a hard time trusting anyone and opening up emotionally, and I also tend to randomly lash out. I’ve been doing my best to dig deep and discover what truly causes it, and try to change, but I just can’t.
@p621 are you trying to dig on your own or in therapy?
On my own, I have limited access to in person therapy because of my occupation, but I am trying 7 Cups out and seeing if it could help.
@Hailey3 hope you get the occasion to try out therapy for childhood trauma.
In the meantime I hope you can reach out to listeners and find a good support here.
I found it helpful to read The body keeps the score by bessel van der kolk. You can find some of his talks online too I guess.
The film the Wisdom of Trauma was also quite interesting.
You may want to look up as well attachment styles as these are formed in childhood
Wish you well
Ps on here it's easier if you tag when you reply to someone to make sure it's seen
@Hailey3
I am sorry that you are going through a breakup. It must be difficult to keep a healthy relationship due to your childhood trauma. I understand your frustration for wanting to do better and leave the past behind, but it just keeps coming back to haunt you. I don't know what happened in your childhood, but you can't change the past, and it's not your fault. You were only a child. If you need professional help, you can reach out to a certified therapist for the best support. If you just want to talk about it with someone, we have a lot of listeners here to support you. Best wishes.
The first step to change is to recognise that change needs to happen. In your post you not only acknowledge a need for change, but also the fact that you are the best agent to achieve change in your life. I believe that these are huge steps towards achieving change. Yes, there is frustration that the change hasn't happened yet, and, my experience is that there will be plenty more of that. But your post reminds me that I shouldn't allow that frustration to make me forget the things I have achieved and I thank you for that and wonder if you should also be reminded of this. You should be proud of the steps already achieved.
I'm certain that you can, and will, achieve the change you want. Just annoyingly, in its own time.
I'll think of you the next time I get frustrated by lack of success and maybe we can be frustrated together ❤ best wishes.
