Ending an unhealthy friendship is hard

September 12th, 2020

I've been dealing with said title topic above lately quite a bit. I've got 2 former friends that I realized were quite toxic for me.

Friend A -- Tried to tell me how to live my life. Because I want to do things differently, the spouse and I have our life worked out in a way that works for us. An example being we have a joint bank account, it's how we keep our finances on the sorted /organized. Some regards are 'huge red flags' to her. All because I don't want to buy a car, as it's not sensible for us, especially since I don't drive. And my spouse uses public transit, which is fine by him. It's focusing on what's in our budget etc. And is a major hypocrite, just...I have a hard time dealing with it. She lives this life of excess stuff and materialism and is in major debt, but has the nerve to criticize me for wanting -one small nice thing- . Most of our convos would be her feedback loop of rants of how she spends her money, yet has this debt so bad she has to live with her parents and blah blah she needs all these extras for her and her kids.

Friend B- major flake, I will make plans and rearrange my WHOLE day around her-- and yet... last second she will decide she can't do something or something came up. And it's always just as we're supposed to meet up.

Most recently, she wanted help cleaning her house, and I was like okay let's find a time that works for both of us. Usually no big deal. Then...flakes out flakes out again.

And wants to invite me to a party for a mutual friend...yet wants me to come clean before hand for said party. She says can I do an IOU for the cleaning? You can come to the party as part of your payment but I'll still pay you for your time. She continues to say ' the dress code are these colours' (knowing I don't own remotely anything close to this colour palette that she has dictated. And then continues onto ' I offered for you to come to the party because the only cash I have is so I can buy -mutual friend- a present and pay for her party stuff. sorry! "

I was thinking I should really really rip into her about all of this stuff, but I decided to step back and just politely refuse the invitation. I'm not going to clean for free (it's a side job of mine) to attend a party that I don't want to go to in the first place. And then...of course, I don't want to bother with it because I have extreme dietary restrictions and I'd stay hungry the whole time because I can't eat anything to begin with. It's also too much hassle for me to go shopping for one event that I don't want to deal with in the first place.

Frankly I'm only typing all of this out so I can release those emotions and frustrations and get on with my day.

Ahh that does sound really frustrating! I hope typing it out made you feel better. And I hope you will be able to deal with these toxic friends!

Take care :)

Oh my! That seems like a lot, and very frustrating with both friends. I can understand how annoying it would feel for friend A to give advice, when they are in a worse financial situation. Friend B seems unpredictable, and the flaking on the cleaning would be very frustrating as well. Yes, you should not have to work for free! Feel free to vent, and I hope they can respect boundaries soon. Hugs!!

Well this is my second day in this website and just today I found something really disturbing about a close friend of mine behind my back, I immediately saw this heading you got. I'm really sorry but honestly I think we all need someone who makes us feel better of ourselves and we are inspired to be a better person when around them. I'm so done with friends pitying me and making me feel more pathetic. Caring is when they want to do something for you, pitying is just feeling sorry for you before getting along with thier lives.I don't know I just felt like someone out there needs to here me ans sorry if it's too long
