Help dealing with communication issue
My boyfriend and I have been t oi together for 4 years. We have always been happy around each other and have always had a close bond. He cheated a couple months ago and we have been trying to work through things. We got into an argument earlier this week. We talked today and he says that he wants to take a 6 month break. We dont usually argue but when we do we hit below the belt and then we make up. We currently live together for over a year with two fur babies. Whenever we do talk though, I feel like I have to compete with his phone. We have tried different things like putting the phones away but we seem to stop following through after a week.
He feels we are lacking in communication and that I dont engage in things he wants. They're not always things I enjoy (i.e. certain video games) or want to do at that moment. I love him and feel like taking a break will lead to us never getting back together. I want to work on communicating and spending more time doing things we enjoy. Does anyone have an idea of where we can give each other space yet work on things? Or exercises we can do to better gain communication? I dont want to end things without exhausting all options.

Hey there, hopefully you are doing well. There's a few things I would like to point out;
We got into an argument earlier this week. We talked today and he says that he wants to take a 6 month break.(This is not a good sign here, so he needs a 6 month break to think about things?. Something must be going on here) We dont usually argue but when we do we hit below the belt and then we make up. (This tells me you two argue, make up, and dont find any resolution or awareness of the root of the problem. The make up part seem to be masking things, and it probably gives a temporary relief because things were never truly discussed) We currently live together for over a year with two fur babies. Whenever we do talk though, I feel like I have to compete with his phone. (This is a sign he is prioritizing the phone, not connecting, and not being present with you.) We have tried different things like putting the phones away but we seem to stop following through after a week.(This tells me he always tells you what you want to hear, gives promises, and then doesn't follow through. He words rarely match his actions, there inconsistency on his part, and he simply knows you will stay no matter what he does or say)
He feels we are lacking in communication and that I dont engage in things he wants. (Let me get this straight...so you have been trying so hard to communicate, express how you feel, while he is on his phone most of the time and then talks about "we lack communucation"?.)They're not always things I enjoy (i.e. certain video games) or want to do at that moment. (You don't have to do them, aslong as you shows curiousity about the things he likes. He feels rejected that you are not doing what he likes, which has nothing to do with you) I love him and feel like taking a break will lead to us never getting back together. (I can see how this is definetly making you feel scared that if a break happens then he might never comeback, however this has to do with past abandonment issues and how they made you feel growing up) I want to work on communicating and spending more time doing things we enjoy. (Its amazing and great you want to do this, but is he showing any effort in doing this?) Does anyone have an idea of where we can give each other space yet work on things? (You must be going through a lot of emotions, and its definetly hard to deal with this, but you can't force him to stay if he wants a break. I do think a 6 month break is way too long) Or exercises we can do to better gain communication? (I do feel you will be able to do the work at getting better at this, but i highly doubt he will. He basically blamed you for everything, and didn't take ownership for his mistakes. You want things to improve, while he tends to be inconsistent and giving up) I dont want to end things without exhausting all options.
