How to find people today

So I've been single for the past 5 years (I'm 22. I made bad choices, wasted a lot of time on women who didn't ever seriously want me, and blew right past good women who at the time really liked me.) And it's finally starting to get to me. I have friends but I still feel really lonely. I miss having an intimate connection with someone. But I now have no idea how to meet anyone. I have no work connections because I'm a construction worker, I'm really not good looking so honestly I'm scared to flirt with people in a setting they might not be comfortable with. I've tried apps like tinder and hinge but I've had no luck. Does anyone have advice on good ways to meet people? I just don't know a good place to start
