Moral Dilema- The Mother in Law

My partner of 6 years is having family issues. His mother is only 44 and is unable to do things for herself due to neglect of her physical health (i.e. sitting for most hours of the day, unable to climb stairs and choosing to sleep on couch for 4 years)

Her mother (my partners grandmother) has always been a wicked, bitter woman and is currently suffering from COPD. Mother has been taking care of Grandmother for the last 4 years. Mother has said that she is taking care of Grandmother to spite her (trying to prove to grandmother how much more rightious she is).

This revenge fueled decision has persisted for the last 4 years. I have watched Mother morph into a nasty person in that time, which is not surprising. My partner feels he has lost his mother (they were always very close).

She used to love me, but she like a switch she started hating me about 2 years ago. She tried to convice my parnter and even myself that I was manipulating him (I am not, I've done lots of self reflection).

So Mother (who is not able bodied) is taking care of Grandmother (who is always nasty and also not able bodied). My partner drives 6 hours round trip to visit them 1-2 times a month. He is always so worried leading up to leaving and so depressed when he returns (I used to go with, but she's made it clear I'm not welcome).

We are young and trying to get our lives together and making tons of headway, but still aren't financially stable.
