Hello! I'm Emma and just for reference purposes, my boyfriend and I are both 18 and we have been together for almost 5 months.

As stated in the title, my boyfriend is in the air force. He is currently going through basic training. i'm having a hard time bc i lived with him for a month before he left, and he's been gone for 3 weeks as of tomorrow, but i'm still struggling. we can't talk every day like we used to. and writing letters and stuff is nice, but it's so hard to not hear from him.

the other problem i am having is that, at some point in the near future, we need to talk about marriage. it would be so much easier for us if we are married. we could live together on or off base, i'd be able to have benefits, i would be able to move with him when his base gets switched, and many other things. however, we will have been dating for a bit over 5 months when he graduates basic, and i don't know if it is too early to discuss this stuff. we've briefly talked about it before, but never made any solid plans. i want to really set a bit of a timeline of thigns with him so we can prepare. i'm just nervous to bring it up.

thank you for listening. <3

So, my boyfriend is 16, turning 17 soon. He wants to join infantry, which he will be able to in a couple months. It just scares me that the thought of him being gone and at a young age. Weve been together for 6 months, we talk every single day and I want a good future between us. The thing is though, it saddens me when he talks about the future. Because of him wanting to join infantry and enlist in the military makes me think there wont be a future. To add on, we are already a long distance relationship.

@AngelinaRinaldi1 it seems silly to be worried about him being gone when we are already already long distance, but it just makes me sad because we wont really be able to have much of any kind of contact while hes gone, and thats never really happened on our relationship yet. It makes me upset now that I cant be with him in person, and soon, I wont even be able to even really talk to him.

I know what it feels like to be with someone in the military. I think first thing you need to understand is the exhaustion and pressure one would have. They would be surrounded with lots of men for most part, not to mention the gambling of whether or not they have a good CO and if their CO is in a good mood. I hope he has a supportive CO though, because thatll make things lots easier. I personally think communication is a great key. Since youre only able to talk once in a while, its a good idea to look quite far into the future, because you can only have so much opportunity to really talk about your plans. Maybe talk about it in moderation, if he gets where youre going with the conversation, hell talk about it. Its fine that you need reassurance, its normal. But its also important that you acknowledge how he might not even be certain himself. Some things in the military are unexpected and uncertain, so be considerate of his situation and be extra understanding. Stay strong and keep up the good faith.
