Struggling

My boyfriend of almost 2 years and I have had some struggles over the past years but we recently found out he has cancer. I promised him that i would be there for him in every way that I can (driving to appointments, taking time off work, doing everything around the house) just so he can focus on his treatment and hopeful recovery. He has sometimes taken his stress and frustration out on me and I completely understand it and have let it go. I am under a lot of stress too, overwhelmed for what is to come, how I will juggle work and being his caregiver, and taking care of everything around the house, but I have kept my stress and struggles to myself as to not overwhelm him anymore.

During a conversation I had forgotten something he said and he got super mad at me for not remembering it, (I remembered half of the previous conversation but not the whole thing) he told me I clearly didn’t care about anything he says for me to easily forget. In the middle of this conversation he tells me that he had gotten a call from his ex because she had heard about his cancer and was very upset about it, offering to help with anything he needs. I was in no way jealous of this call, I thought it was rather nice of her. Following this argument he got mad that I had washed a blanket of his when he didn’t want it washed, I only did it because I thought it would be a nice thing to have a fresh blanket for bedtime.

He told me that due to these two incidents he does not trust me anymore, that he doesn’t believe I can take care of him or even be there for him. And that his ex is a much more suitable person to take care of him. I have spent the past weeks getting ready for this treatment to start (cleaning the house, grocery shopping, making sure everything is sorted and taken care of) and now he tells me we are over because of this.

i am completely heartbroken considering I have only been trying to help while under so much stress myself but he does not see that.

@forcefulSea7026 I'm so sorry all this happened, and I'm sure you cared about him a lot to want to help him so much. Tbh it kind of seems like you are out of a bad situation though, since he acted pretty entitled when you were doing a lot to help him. Plus in my opinion, ideally this type of role should fall to a professional caregiver and the way he felt entitled to it instead of seeing it as you being extra kind is not okay.
