All Saints Day and All Souls Day

This is an inspiring weekend, as The Feast of All Saints (All Saints' Day) is this Sunday, followed by All Souls' Day on Monday evening. These two feast days are very significant red-letter days on the liturgical calendar. I have had a lot of people lately asking precisely what is so special about each of them.

All Saints' Day is a service dedicated to life and living essentially. It is the day we celebrate salvation and all living members of the earthly communion of saints. It is a day to celebrate life. It is also one of two major days on the liturgical calendar for baptisms.

All Souls Day is the day and service dedicated to honoring and commemorating the dead and salvation. A day to celebrate loved ones who have passed away, becoming members of the heavenly communion of saints. These two services became very significant to me after my mom passed away. So, tomorrow morning will be a magnificent and grand Solemn High Mass, and Monday will be a Low Mass. The more special the day, the more incense is used, resulting in some people rushing to the front door to catch a breath.

I wish everyone a happy All Saints Day and All Souls Day.

Peace be with you all.

@Amanda84

I agree; they are both great days. This morning at church, we celebrated the Feast of All Saints with a big, glorious Anglo-Catholic Solemn High Mass. And even better, we had a baptism today. Baptisms always make me tear up, but a beautiful communion hymn did more. It's called Jesus Son of Mary. It was a 2.5-hour-long service, as they literally named off all the saints while we walked in a procession around the church five times in a baptismal procession (I had no idea that the composer Johannes Sebastian Bach had been made a saint, did you). After the baptism, we all renewed our baptismal vows. I will definitely be packing a lot of Kleenex for The Feast of All Souls. I hope you had a great All Saints Day and All Souls Day!
