My Relationship with God and Recovery
I don't know how to start this but I wanted to share how my relationship with God went from non-existent to what it is now.
As a kid I grew up Christian and went to Sunday school, but at that age I didn't really understand what faith was which made my first experience with religion not a pleasant one.
I would often ask why things were a certain way and didn't know how to interpret scripture.
Most if not all of these questions were "Why wouldn't God do x?" or "Why would God let horrible things happen?" without realizing the bigger picture.
Sunday school went as well as you would expect.
People would often tell me that my questions were wrong without giving me any kind of explanation, leaving me even more confused.
Because of this experience, I ended up resenting God at a young age and hating Sunday school.
When I was a teen, I started openly disassociating with God and avoided anything to do with religion until high school where I gained an interest in Norse mythology and decided to "follow" it's pantheon.
I stuck to this for a few years before ultimately abandoning the interest entirely and trusting science over faith. (I still believe in evolution and creation theory)
During this loss in faith I, like most hormonal teens do at that age do - I started pursuing lust. I became addicted to adult content and it would occupy most of my time, sometimes interfering with school.
This addiction continued for several years into my adulthood without any real desire to change my habits.
I'm probably skipping a lot here and forgetting details but I just wanted to provide context as to how I got to this point.
During the height of my addiction, I experienced what could only be described as divine intervention.
When I realized that "okay this is becoming a problem, I can't stop" I tried distancing myself from things that would encourage my vice without actually seeking treatment.
Enter God.
God saw my destructive behavior and used his influence to ensure I couldn't hide from my problems, his message was simple "Continue down this path and people will get hurt."
It was this message from God that finally convinced me to seek help.
I felt the Holy Spirit giving me sanctuary and for the first time in years I felt that God cared about me.
Today I'm still on the road to recovery, I still have a lot of work ahead of me but I have God to thank for this second chance.
