More Than Religious Dramas: Two TV Series That Take You Into Another World

This summer, I had the opportunity to revisit a TV series that I had watched before, The Men of Angelos (Ashab-ı Kehf / The Seven Sleepers), and to watch The Messiah, a series portraying the life of Jesus (peace be upon him) for the first time.

I was genuinely impressed by both productions.

What makes these series special, in my opinion, is that they are much more than ordinary religious movies or biblical-style productions. They are works of art that take you into another historical world.

The Men of Angelos / The Seven Sleepers takes us back to the Roman period and the world of early Christianity. It portrays the persecution faced by early Christians and gives a sense of the historical and social atmosphere in which they lived. The story of the Seven Sleepers is particularly fascinating because it exists in both Christian tradition and the Qur’an, where it is discussed in Surah Al-Kahf (The Cave).

What I especially appreciate is that the story can be approached from an Islamic perspective while still allowing the viewer to understand the historical Christian context. It raises timeless questions about faith, persecution, courage, conscience, and the human search for truth.

The Messiah, on the other hand, offers a dramatic portrayal of the life of Jesus. For a Muslim viewer, it can be especially interesting because Islam also regards Jesus (Isa, peace be upon him) as one of the greatest prophets. Watching his story through a historical and artistic production can open a different window into the world in which he lived and the people surrounding him.

And honestly, I think both series deserve to be watched simply as works of art.

There are productions you watch merely to follow a story. And then there are productions that gradually draw you into their atmosphere—you don't feel that you are simply watching the story; you feel as though you have entered the world in which it took place.

If you are interested in history, Christianity, Islam, or simply beautifully made historical dramas, I would genuinely recommend giving these two series a chance.

And don't judge them too quickly after the first episode. Give them a little time. Their atmosphere is part of what makes them special.
