Balance between Security and Freedom

March 22nd, 2019

We don't want trolls, perverts. We don't want negative human connections, addictive relations. We don't want that. So we keep it secure. Stay on the site, no offsite, for we can't enforce safety there (the way we do it here through reports, blocks, moderating, mentoring etc.)

But hey, let us talk about freedom too. We do not want to stop good relations from happening either. A good relation in life is a rare gift. If a relation initiated through 7cups has that kind of potential, then it is evil to stop it from happening offsite/offline. Who are we to stop a beautiful friendship or relation from happening in this world? In the name of security? Or does security become a suffocation at such a time?

So, we need to see the value of both security and freedom. Equal importance needs to be given. Have it as a general warning that offline/offsite contact can be hazardous for one's well being, but at the same time leave it to the individual's discretion and choice.

This is all I could think about it. Contribute your thoughts and views too. : )

@Fristo When you write about balance, you make it seem that security and freedom have equal weight. This is not true.

Without security the risk is that a crazy stalker, rapist or murderer could use 7 Cups to find vulnerable victims. Some of our members are children, some have mental illness, and some have other disabilities. We try to protect everyone from that risk. If 7 Cups allowed something very bad to happen to a vulnerable member, a further risk is that the bad publicity could force 7 Cups to close.

Without freedom to make offsite contact the risk is that some beautiful friendships might not happen. It is sad to think that some beautiful friendships might not happen. But not as sad as if a crazy person harms a vulnerable member and 7 Cups has to close.

Security has much more weight than the freedom to make offsite contact, because of the risks involved. Therefore the balance tips a long way in the direction of security. Offsite contact is still possible, as you know Winking No one really stops it happening. But on balance 7 Cups promotes security.

@RarelyCharlie That makes a lot of sense. Though I would say that not giving 'freedom' any weight at all, would be a mistake. Because the more you deny freedom, the more people break rules. So instead of policing a safety rule, we need to have more discussions and opinions about the importance/need of safety, so that the individuals are better equipped in their minds when making choices about freedom.

@Fristo I agree in theory, but what you suggest has turned out to be very difficult at 7 Cups. Sometimes we even get things backwards, penalizing friendships while enabling predators. Even if we designed a better system in this forum thread, I think the chances of it being implemented are approximately zero.

@RarelyCharlie hm, I hear that often. 'Good in theory, tough to implement'. hm hm. I would not agree each time. I believe in working towards implementation, having more ideas about how to implement. Destination is never the goal, progress towards the destination (the journey) itself is the goal. The progress, any little, towards an inspiring thing, is good for our well being.

I am sorry if I did not catch your point, or if I missed out explaining myself somewhere, but it is okay. Sharing thoughts is good, maybe. : )

@RarelyCharlie, do you think are most of the people following this no -offsite contact ? How come I hear news of people being blackmailed?

@ItsPreeti Most people? I do not know!

I have never heard about anyone being blackmailed. But I agree with you that there are people who have no basic sense, and bad things are likely to happen to them because of it.

The system we have now is that 7 Cups does not prohibit offsite contact. If any two people make the choice, they can contact each other offsite. 7 Cups warns people not to do it, but 7 Cups does not prevent it.

I do not think 7 Cups should prohibit offsite contact, because that would not work.

I do not think 7 Cups should stop warning people about it, because that could make 7 Cups more dangerous for people who have no basic sense. The best we can do is warn them.

@RarelyCharlie You said it well. : ) Some people are somewhat naive to not know what to do with what, so they need some security instructions. : ) General warning would then be a parental care.

@Fristo, I agree to you- after all our choice is our choice . The only problem lies here is most of the people here are have no basic sense that they meet the unknown people who just talk sugary to them and then those unknown people-i don't know how these illiterate people give them photos and then they are blackmailed. So, they can well report to police if they have that much courage to meet 2-3 old people. 7cups should not prohibit offsite contact. A choice is a choice. Noone should force offsite contacts.

@ItsPreeti Yes, that is what seem to be happening. Innocent kids (regardless of age) and sugary talks to trap their good hearts. 7cups is comparatively a safer place (compared to many other online places), I hope it continues its work and get better at it. Presence of people like Preeti helps.

@ItsPreeti YES, I WAS ANGRY. HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Okay let me say a more non-kiddy thing. Anger can be good, if it is backed up by "compassion for all" (like a motherly scolding). Anger is bad and weak when it is backed up by selfishness and egoistical fears.

That is really an interesting theme for discussion, as I think. To be honest, I prefer security in this case.
