When 7 Cups Fails at it's own guidelines - TW for someone's various hateful viewpoints
Decisions here have disappointed me before. I am totally horrified at what has happened with the Leadership Development Program though.
One of the discussions required us to read a post on Scott Adams' site. The link was in the post, written by @GlenM on June 29
The post was a summary of a book written by Scott Adams. We were also told to watch a video, about the same book. The youtube channel at least is not one of Scott Adams' as far as I'm aware.
Scott Adams is the writer of Dilbert and it is well known that he is the total opposite of an ally to many different groups.
To suggest that people from a support site - people who are leaders here - should go to Scott Adam's site really horrifies me.
Scott Adams has long been know to have problematic viewpoints, this hasn't just come up in the last few years. I would say a good majority of people who are familiar with his work are aware of this.
Even the post itself was problematic, although it doesn't necessarily show hateful views, the way food and size were discussed isn't something I expect to see right on 7cups. And then there are tags right on that page which should really clue someone into checking out what type of site it is before linking - Charlottesville Hoax, BLM, Antifa.
People make money off of their websites - by going to this site, it's a way to give him financial support in an indirect way.
I don't see how as a site we can say we support BLM, LGBTQ+, peoples with disabilities, people of colour, people struggling with body image, etc. etc. and then encourage people go to any site owned by this person.
I'm really concerned that no one spoke up until now. I just reached that point in the LDP. I understand not everyone was aware of who Scott Adams is. I also understand just reading the post and not noticing the site. But no one in ~2 months?
I also think that in general companies need to take responsibility for what they post. When Glen posts something, that is different than a member or listener posts. This was also part of a course, not just a simple post, it was part of training - what we want to see from the leaders here. There should be some oversight, there should be a bit of checking into what sites we send people too. It doesn't take much checking to realize the problematic viewpoints just from the mainpage. Or type his name into google - I'm fairly confident it doesn't matter when one does this, as long as they get hits on the correct person, that something would come up that should at least make someone pause and dig a bit deeper before making a connection with what their company is doing to him.
I appreciate that the links have been changed while I have been drafting this post, but it shouldn't have been there in the first place.
Trigger warning for what's in the below links- gender, race, disability, pretty much anyway people are trying to achieve equality (and none of this will link to anything owned by Scott Adams) to show examples

In the above, images from Dilbert are combined with quotes by Scott Adams

@AffyAvo - This kind of awareness is critical, especially for a mental health support site. Thank you.
