"Why Safety is Important to Me." - (video)
Safety can be a bit of a nebulous subject. What does it mean? How does safety impact us? Why does it matter, and how do we apply it to our everyday lives?
In my efforts to simplify the topic of safey, I came across this video which really showcases what safety is all about. Please give it a look and tell me what you think, and if you have had any personal experiences you feel like sharing in response to this video!
The video is an ad for an Australian workplace health and safety consultancy. Workplace health and safety isn't nebulous at all—well, not in Australia, anyway—it's extremely well defined by government regulations and industry codes of practice.
In our everyday lives there are not so many government health and safety regulations that we must comply with. Road safety is the most obvious exception, but even so, you don't need a hard hat and steel reinforced boots to travel on a bus.
As it happens, the last member I chatted to here suffers from OCD, a condition that does cause sufferers to live over-regulated lives—imagining they are staying safe, but in reality missing out on life's opportunities.
Less commonly, people who suffer from some other mental illnesses sometimes take risks that the rest of us would consider foolish. Bipolar disorder is one example of this kind of illness.
So I think it's important to look at safety in context. Workplaces are different from other environments. People with certain mental illnesses may find it difficult to judge safety accurately.

I really liked the video!!! Safety is really important. I like how she called people who don't put safety first a "gambler" sometimes you get lucky when you gamble and sometimes you lose. Safety is something I guess shouldn't be gambled. Thanksies for posting this video! It has a really good safety message!!!!!! TUNA SAYS SQUAWK "Safety First" XD
