Why do people hate "emos"?
I'm extremely emotional myself, and I get extremely sad and annoyed when people hate on me. I just don't really understand why, come on, I'm a normal person too...
I hate being myself, honestly. and then when other people hate me just because there's something wrong up there, it just makes it worse. Could anyone please explain? I just don't understand.. :(
Having never been part of the 'emo' community or even having known someone who is I thought I would give a outsider perspective and consider what you may view as misconceptions but which none the less exist.Just to let you know I don't hate you I try to love everyone but know my actions will sometimes fall short of this.Anyway returning to the original point.
1.Fear
I think a lot of sub-cultures experienceprejudice due to fear and with emos in particular there is a reputation for a interest in the 'darker' side of life and areas that people tend to be afraid of 1.Groups of young people (due to the media there is a very negative view of this and people feel afraid) 2.Intrest in death (for older people who have or are likely to have more experience and pain here seeing a young person well in some ways obsessing about it is uncomfortable) 3.the ripple effect (many people see what some members of the community do and channel their emotional state into eg.cutting) and worry that the effect may be contagious.
2.Making your issues your identity
This may well be false but none the less it is a perception -Many people move away from letting this happen there is a view that 'emos' do not want to try and become in a better emotional mindframe and this is frustrating for others who do not feel this way.
3.Wealth
I am sorry but this is true there is a stereotype that emos are middle class teenagers who have never been confronted but what would be considered by others to be the more challenging issues in life and for people who struggle with issues outside the scope of that social group eg.Homelessness and extreme poverty this is challenging.
4.Mental illness
There is a view that emosmake light of serious issues that cause pain for a lot of people and very few seem to be activity involved in recovery and naturally some people see this as mocking.
Of course there is always the view of teenage rebellion which never goes down well and this idea that emos 'like the attention' which regardless of whether it is true or not contributes to the way people seem to hate this group.
Ah, okay.t
At point 1: Yes, I do know I'm spooky and they'd be way to spooked out if they saw the cut on my arm.. It's way 2spooky4them.
At point 2: Yes, I must admit I am a stereotype, I guess... :P I have my hair infront of my eyes, always wear black and I'm going to dye my hair really dark purple. I'm not an attention whore like some of us though, I find those extremely ignorant.
3: Yes, I am an annoying first world problems kid, and I know people have it so much worse. I'm still depressed though, but oh boy, do I know that I do NOT want to be in their shoes. it doesn't change the fact that I'm always sad though.
4:Yes, some of us are attention whores, and like I said, I find them extremely ignorant. I think some of them are literally faking it. And yes, I have a lot of mental illnesses, but you can't see that just by looking at how I dress myself. That's how the kids in my class see me. "hurr durr u have hair infront of eye!!1 now u r emo!!" Yes, I am, but you can't see that just by looking at me.
Damn, this world really just pisses me off sometimes. Wow.
I suppose you are right though, and thanks for explaining.
I am very very curious though .... And would be interested in your perspective why do people become 'Emos' in short what is the attraction? Why do you do it ?
I didn't choose the emo life, the emo life chose me. :P Just kidding.
Nah, I was just born being very emotional and lately I've been feeling very depressed.
I must admit, I used to be like "eww, y u so stereotypical.." and now (I honestly don't know why, I just do) I'm like "Wow. Give me that, right the fuck now." :3
So yeah, it might just be our mind being weird and hormones giving it a huge boost.
Is that enough explanation? :)
Yes it was certainly a interesting explanationthank you.I have another question though, do you feel that wanting to be 'accepted' and the group aspect was part of what attracted you to this ?
No.. Not at all actually. I don't care about the "community" ofemos& such. I wasn't "put in there" or something at all. I was just born being very emotional. I don't care much about "being accepted" either. As long as they see me as a normal person or just don't hate me, I'm completely fine with being me. And if they hate on me in my real life, I'll just spook them out by doing something spooky or telling them how I feel. Or when the kids in my class tell me I'm "emo" I just ask them what their definition is of "emo" and then they shut their dirty little mouthes. :)
