I don't understand the point of the jokes and feel like they're a criticism of the 7 Cups mission. That concerns me because there is a difference between disagreeing with the way that things are done here and disagreeing with having a platform where people can seek mental and emotional support free of charge.
From some of the other posts in the forums, the operating cost for 7 Cups is about $65,000 a month or $780,000 a year. That is spread out between salaries for 9 admin members (excluding GlenM, who is not being paid). The math comes down to each admin member being paid between $60,000 to $75,000 a year, which is a significant pay cut, considering that the admin members are coming from positions such as private clinical practice (which can easily make $100,000+ a year) to coding (GlassDoor places the average salary for a Full Stack Engineer at $115,000 a year).
I wanted to respond to this forum post because it seems to imply that nothing at 7 Cups is okay and that listeners are foolish for volunteering here. That's not the case.
I've been frustrated with some decisions made here. I've vented about how I vehemented disagree with some changes. And I get it, sometimes I do feel that I deserve more appreciation or at the very least have my frustrations acknowledged. For that, I will not be deleting your post because yes you should have the right to vent out as well.
But for the cost of $65,000 a month and the time and dedication listeners have put into this website, 7 Cups has been able to do some great things in making mental and emotional support accessible.
I've been able to help sexual assault survivors feel safe enough to reach out to local support groups. I've helped individuals from relapsing in self harm. I've helped people salvage relationships that they felt were crumbling.
When I see jokes such as these that target the entire organization, it disheartens me because 7 Cups isn't just a team of admins. It disheartens me because that joke is at the expense of listeners, members, and guests. That $780,000 a year pulls people out of dark places in their lives and helps them on the road towards becoming better. Please think about the sweat and tears that we also pour into this website in order to give back and make others feel supported and loved.
