Self Worth
I recently changed from working full-time to working part-time due to my Bipolar Disorder and Narcolepsy getting worse. I’m still able to afford all my bills, and I’d have a little bit of money left over. I believe that it’s the best decision for me at this point in time, because I want to focus more on my health. I’d also qualify for Medicaid, and I’d qualify for disability, which I’m in the application process for it. I know that I’ve made a good and informed decision on my own about my life, but I can’t help but feel weak and useless for not being able to work a full-time schedule. I just have so much pressure on myself and set high standards for myself. Does anyone have any advice on how to be kinder towards yourself, and to help me accept that I’ve made a good and informed decision for my job during this point in my life?

Having health issues forces us to make changes, that's being responsible and not pretending. I feel like for the most part of my life I've been ill and pushing myself to be the same as a healthy person, to my own detriment, so I understand the inner conflict.
If it helps, make a pro/con list. I know you've already decided what to do, but maybe seeing it written out, will reinforce that Yes this is the best thing.
I guess keep going against your misgivings and prioritise your health needs, rest when you need too and where possible, make the most of your productive day, whether it's professional or personal tasks, that helps me to be satisfied.
When I reclaimed my weekends, at first I felt incredibly idle and selfish but it's made a huge difference.
I feel so much better, taking time for myself, sometimes it feels like we are told to push past our limits and carry on....
But as a sick person, that's not helpful. It's good to challenge and unlearn certain things.
Thank you for your words and advice. I’ve already made a pros/cons list, and I do feel better about my decision. I just wish I was the same healthy person as I was before, but that’s changed now, and it’s been hard to cope with that. I keep trying to push myself to be like I was before, but it’s just not working. I need to work on giving myself some grace and tell myself that I’ve changed and need the extra support.
@GalaxyDreamer28 You are just being practical, sometimes I think the mind takes a lil while to catch up with reality :)
I see it as, I'm different to how I was. I appreciated the energy I had and the ability to do so much in a day but things happen and I'll still do what I can, but within a strictish limit now.
What you could also do, if you're not already, is give yourself a pat on the back for even the small accomplishments.
That was a nice change I made for myself, instead of thinking Gosh, you can't manage even that? I spin it too...
It's ok, I have my shortcomings, I will work around it.
Plus, Oh that other idea or that activity you did, was really well thought out. You worked hard and delivered excellent results, be proud of that :)
