When Things Feel Too Much: A Safety Plan You Can Save
I wanted to create this post as I think it is important to have safety plans in place. I know that not all moments feel the same. Sometimes the emotions feel too bad while at other times there are specific urges to hurt yourself. Because these experiences can need different kinds of support, I wanted to introduce two self-guided safety plan templates that you can use privately, at your own pace.
⚠️ Important note
- Thoughts that show up:
- Emotions that spike:
- Body sensations (tight chest, restlessness, numbness, etc.):
🛑 Safer Alternatives
Things that help release or ride out urges without injury
- Sensory tools (ice, holding something cold/warm, textures):
- Physical movement (walking, stretching, squeezing a pillow):
- Distractions that fully engage me:
🧸 Comfort & Grounding
- Breathing or grounding exercises that help:
- Music, shows, or sounds that calm me:
- Pets, blankets, or familiar objects:
- People I can message or talk to:
- What helps when I reach out (listening, distraction, reminders):
🚨 When I Need More Support
If urges feel unmanageable or I feel unsafe, I agree to reach out to:
👉 7cups.com/crisis or local emergency services.
🌊 Safety Plan B: When I’m Emotionally Overwhelmed
This plan is for moments when emotions feel too intense, even without urges to self-harm.
🌧️ What Overwhelm Feels Like for Me
- Emotions I notice (panic, sadness, anger, numbness):
- Thoughts that loop:
- How my body reacts:
🌬️ Grounding & Regulation
Things that help my nervous system settle
- Breathing exercises I like:
- Gentle movement or stretching:
- Sensory comforts (lighting, temperature, scents):
🧠 Mental Supports
- Self-talk that helps (even a little):
- Writing, journaling, or venting safely:
- Letting myself cry or rest without fixing everything:
🤝 Connection
- Who feels safe to talk to when I’m overwhelmed:
- How I want support to look (listening, reassurance, distraction):
🚨 If Overwhelm Turns into Feeling Unsafe
If my thoughts shift toward not wanting to be here or I feel unsafe, I will reach out to:
