How to clean SH wounds? TW: SH.

Regrettably, i relapsed today. Last time I engaged in SH behavior I think i was 11 or 12. Im pretty sure after i was done I'd rub hand sanitizer all over my legs because 1) i was scared of getting them infection, and 2) i liked that it hurt.

Can anybody share how they treat their SH wounds? It doesn't necessarily have to be about cutting. When people start to self harm, nobody ever tells them how to treat it afterwards. Improper aftercare can leave it a bit smelly and itchy.

@UssrTeacup I’m really sorry you’re going through this, and please remember that a relapse doesn’t erase the progress you’ve made. ❤️‍🩹 I also agree that aftercare is something people don’t talk about enough.

First, be honest with yourself about how serious the wound is. If it’s deep, gaping, won’t stop bleeding, or shows signs of infection, such as increasing redness, warmth, swelling, worsening pain, or pus, please seek medical attention. You deserve proper care, regardless of how the injury happened.

For basic wound care, gently clean it with clean water and mild soap around the wound. Don't use hand sanitizer, rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide directly on it since they can irritate it. Cover it with a sterile, non-stick dressing and change it regularly. If you're struggling with the urge to SH again, please reach out to someone you trust. Urges usually pass eventually, so try distracting yourself until they do. You can also make a list of things to try when the urge hits, like screaming into a pillow, splashing cold water on your face, or calling a friend. Let's see if we can find ways to cope before it gets to that point.

Sending you so much love and support.❤️ Xx
