I was in sixth grade. I felt like I had no one, so I started by using my nails. Pressing them into my skin and pulling, slowly. It then went to scissors, and eventually pencil sharpener blades. I would sit in my room when everyone else was alseep and silently cry and cut and wish for life to get better. So that was the first time I experimented with self harm...

I was 14 years old, when I did it for the first time. I was reading some colorful magazines for teenage girls and there were some articles about this issue... And I'm honestly angry, that they printed this in teenage press, because otherwise many people wouldn't start experimenting with it. Of course it was like "it's bad, don't do it", but who will listen? When you're 14, you always feel like no-one understands you, you always have some problems, so when I read about self-harm as something to cope with it - I did it. With a needle. I was covering it with a large bracelet. Then I grew up and bigger problems appeared in my life - and I still use self harm as a way to cope with them. Just because some moron thought it will be good to mention self harm in a teenage press.

I was 16, I had no one, no friends, my family didn't care about me, I was either in the way or I was annoying them ... so I bottled everything up and one day I couldn't take it so I cut my wrist 4 times ... then I stopped for a year and I started up again last December it went all down hill from there

My ex best friend and I were in a huge fight about something. I was already struggling with depression at the time and one thing I did was googlerelatable image. That day one of them referenced cutting so I was like hey what if I tried. I got a pair of scissors. It didn't bleed, butevery time afterwards did. I texted one of my other friends (she had recovered from cutting) and the first thing she said was "oh _my name_ what happened"

I was 16. I started to gel really bad acne and I felt so insecure and I was always being compared to my cousin and it made me feel horrible. How I was never going to be good enough so one night i pressed a blade against my skin and I became addicted to it. I loved the feeling of having control over something in my life. I wanted to feel something even if was pain. To this day I still crave it I crave the control the tingling sensation and how my skin puffs out. I'll never be good enough and I'm done trying to be someone I'm not

I was pretty young. I can remember many, many instances of self-harm looking back on my childhood-- hitting and biting myself, punchingstone walls, sticking straight pins through my fingertips and ripping them out sideways.... When I was 4 or 5, I played a game of chicken with my back porch stairs-- walking to the start of the brick sidewalk, lowering my head while closing my eyes, and running at the stairs until I lost my nerve and opened my eyes. Finally, I didn't lose my nerve. I hit the stairs head on and guess I knocked myself out. I walked into the house when I was up again. I called out for my mom, and she told me to back outside and play because she was on the phone.
I stood there, quietly pouring blood from my split head onto the floor, untilshe turned around to notice.

My harm of choice became cutting, something I had never heard of before, since I'm in my 40s now, and back in the olden days, if anyone was doing it, sure as hell no one was going to talk about it. I recall it being summer, and I had been out running, trying to reach some timed goal or something, and failed at it. I was probably 10, maybe 11. I failed at whatever it was, and began to fill with rage at myself for being incompetent, useless, stupid, weak, and anything negative I could think of. I grabbed my white and pink hairbrush and slammed it at the bedroom wall. The handle broke off, and I thought about what a loser I was for breaking my brush on top of everything else. I wrapped my fingers around the jaggedly broken handle and began slashing at my ugly, fat thighs with it until I was tired enough to let go.

More calm, I wondered at what I'd done. After cleaning up, I went outside to run again. A neighbor noticed the scratches and asked what had happened. I told him, "I fell in a pricker bush" and that was that. No one ever really noticed my cutting until I cut too deeply at 27 and required 30 something stitches.

The cutting has altered here and there over the years, and I've gone long stretches without succumbing. But whether 3 years, or 8, or just 2 or 3 weeks go by, it always rears its ugly head again.

The incredibly awful part of it now is that it provides zero relief, but I still sometimes do it because I am so out of control frustrated and screaming for relief that never comes, because I've never been able to find a way to soothe my rages and anxieties, and parasuicidal ideations.

So, long story short, all of ya'llwho are a little less far along this nasty path as I am-- at all costs, FIND A HEALTHY WAY TO SOOTHE YOURSELF. It is the only way to beat this horrible compulsion.

Thanks for reading this lengthy diatribe. I wish all of us comfort and peace.

At the age of seven I began pulling out my hair... It was really hard... I was not only moving house... I was moving to the other side of the world... I had no friends and I have always been ADHD... So that didn't help... However I consider that the first time I REALLY experimented with self harm would be when I was eleven... My older sister had taken a huge fall and broken her back a while before which really had upset things... Se had surgery so that the doctors could perform a spinal fusion... She was in hospital... And I was pretty much a full time caretaker (mum) to my two younger siblings... My sister who was five and brother who was seven... I couldn't take the worry and the stress I felt like such a failure and that everything was my fault... I felt unnoticed... Invisible... I hated who I was... And I hated the way I was... And I told myself it was selfish of me to need people when my sister was so hurt... And so I began to cut... And scratch... And hurt... and burn... Anything I could do to hurt me... I wanted to be done... I certainly contemplated just ending it all... At one point I even had a plan... That was the first time I remember... I have always pulled out my hair and picked at my skin....
