First time you ever experimented with self-harm?
When I was 17 I think, that was the first time I remember self-harming. Before that, I don't think I showed any signs of self-harm...
I was in 7th grade at a new school and it was half-way through Term 1. I had only made a minimal amount of friends and felt I didn't belong and the people around me were essentially bullying me. I couldn't understand why people didn't like me, I felt I was doing something wrong. So I got it in my head that if I hurt myself whenever I did something wrong, I would stop doing it and become a better person. When I first hurt myself I couldn't believe how numb my own skin felt. And over time, I built up this relief I would get from hurting myself until I really couldn't get through one day without it.
I had experimented with self-harm as early as middle school, but typically with apathy so I don't really consider it my 'first'.
That happened when I was 19, suffering from severe depression, and (though I didn't know at the time) dissociating real hard. I was smoking out of a metal pipe in my backyard--it was hot, so I was without my shirt--my mind was gone...I was gone.
I don't know who did it, but I ended up putting the hot metal to the skin above my heart. The heat was intense, the submission was worse. There's something powerful about denying human nature, and in branding myself I was enforcing that control.
I didn't self-harm for quite some time after that, but that opened the door; once I did start it again (age 21) I dove into it.
*Sigh*
It's a terrible coping method...but my first experience is one of sucessful grounding.
First time I self harmed was with my fountain pen when I was eleven. Then with scissors and now with a compass. Still can
I think it started at fourteen... it went on into my twenties until I had to go to the emergency room cause I opened up my forearm so badly it needed to be 'sawed'. Now I have and awful scar and I have never do anything to myself ever since (even though I've had the motivation).
Around 12 years old started with just pinching and scratching, that escalated to scratching myself with scissors and then to (more recent ly- last 6 months) cutting with razors and slapping myself and stuff
When I was four years old I tried to suffocate myself with a pillow. I though if I died everything and everyone would be better. My family was very abusive and I frequently got blamed for everything and still do for that matter. I starting cutting when I was 14. I haven't done that since maybe 2006, I came to the realization that life is already painful enough and short. Why inflict more pain on myself!
@modestTalker1536
I'm so proud of you for staying clean for so long!
@butterflyPessimist thank you!!
The last time I cut myself I nearly died and was rushed to the emergency room and had to get a lot of stitches. There was a lot of blood. I was so angry at myself for what people had been doing to me It made me feel better in a way to hurt myself. I was angry at myself for people not loving me and allowing people to hurt me.
I started it when I was 14. I was badly bullied by the people who I used to call "friends". Back then,they would spread false rumours about me to tarnish my reputation. So,I tried to move on by making new friends. However to my dismay, many of my classmates start to avoid me because of those stupid rumors. That shattered me and I could no longer take it anymore. So I tried all sort of ways to relieve the pain and self harming was one of them.
I have only just recently realised that I started self harming from a young age. When my parents used to shout at me or I got angry I used to scratch up my arms and legs till they were red and sometimes bleeding slightly ! It was only when I turned around 12/13 I started using razor blades and I actually got the idea online and now at the age of 18 i struggle with constant urges and only fully gave it up and threw the blades away at the end of 2017! Its crazy all the forms of self harm there is, its so easy to by pass certain behaviour.
