Hi everyone, I'm Adam and I'm a new designer at 7 Cups. I'll be responsible for improving existing designs (like how to find your way around the site/app, designing a more consistent color scheme, or making the app look & feel friendly) and creating future 7 Cups experiences for all of you.

I'm looking forward to listening to all of your feedback on what you like and dislike about our website and app. This will help us greatly improve the experience at 7 Cups. If you're interested in participating, I'll also be sending out surveys periodically to get feedback on new ideas and new designs we're exploring. Most importantly I want to make sure that everything we design helps you to find the support you need and give back to the community. I hope to talk to you all soon!

Thanks,

Adam

@healingOcean78, Welcome! I hope you enjoy redesigning 7cups, as well as everything the site has to enjoy! PS. As a member/Listener, I noticed that my listener account status can be changed, by me, between offline {red}/busy {orange}/online {green}. Could the member status also be redesigned to let the member manually change their status? I feel like it says I'm not available for anything, while at the same time telling me that I'm not wanted onsite.

@Adam7CupsUX

I feel the most important stakeholder in this organization is the listeners. Everyone depends on the listeners and they drive the success of 7 cups. They provide support to members via 1-on-1 chats, via support in the rooms, and the listeners become the pool of candidates for leadership roles. And they are volunteers. They are not paid. But there are ways to support and cultivate and appreciate these stakeholders even though we do not pay them with a salary. One way is to make sure that they feel welcome. Another way is to make sure that they get all the support that they need via training that is either live or self-paced. Another way is to look at the path that listeners take, and how they are managed as they go through various stages. Another way is the give listeners recognition.

When I look at the training and certification page, there is no training on active listening except for the first training that we give brand new listeners. To be honest I find this very shocking. I see listed "Active Listening: The Basics", "Active Listening: Questions", "Active Listening: In-Depth" and "Active Listening: Refresh and Self-Care." However, if I open them, there is no training all, each of these is a test. There are no materials to be found to assist in preparing for these tests.

A listener is expected to dig around in the forums and find materials in a hodgepodge sort of fashion. Does this make sense? How many listeners do we lose every day because they look at the Training and Certifications Page seeking training to become a better listener and find no training to help them? Would you feel welcome? Would you want to volunteer your time? Would you dig around through the maze of the forums to learn more about how to be a better listener?

If we did pay the listeners, and hypothetically if a listener worked 10 hours a week at $10 an hour, over a year it would cost us $5200 per listener. But people are volunteering their time, so each potential listener is like a $5200 investor who is thinking about investing in 7 cups. The Training and Certifications page should be treated with the same respect as a prospectus to be shown to potential investors. After looking at the Training and Certifications page, would you invest $5200 in 7 cups? Would you want to volunteer your time and also put in the effort to train yourself? And each time a person digs around in the forums to try and figure out how to be a better listener, it is like trying to re-invent the wheel. We have the technology to make this a much easier process, but we seem to hold the belief that each new listener should just be thrown in the water to sink or swim. Where is the support? Where is the training? How in the world can we have a site that is devoted to active listening and have absolutely no training on active listening? When I opened the "Active Listening: The Basics" and found no training but just a test, I felt like I had been hit in the gut with a baseball bat. I gave up listening for over a year. We have no way to track how many people give up forever.
We have a constant demand for listeners, there are more requests for chat than people to listen on a fairly consistent basis. Has anyone considered that maybe we would have more listeners if we had better training and if we supported our listeners? We worry about the app being appealing to members, and that is important, I agree. But we treat listeners like unwanted step-children when we should be treating them as potential investors. We should be rolling out the red carpet and giving listeners every possible opportunity to grow and learn through training. We should be worried about listeners feeling welcome. We should make it appealing to them to volunteer their time.
To be honest, I feel apprehensive sharing my thoughts. My path to becoming a listener has been a nightmare. It has been really horrible, but I somehow made it. And saying this out loud, I feel like the child who speaks up and says that the Emporer has no clothes. I worry that I may have to deal with some retaliation. I really hope that 7 cups can take this opportunity to learn and grow. I think we can do better, and I think we must. What if we made it a priority to develop great listeners? Imagine that. Use your technology to make that happen. That will drive the success of 7 cups.

I couldn't agree more! The half an hour tutorial in the beginning is not nearly enough to prepare someone for active listening. Luckily I had a wonderful mentor, who from time to time dived into the enormous amount of information available and gave me links to the relevant. But even then I felt lost and wasn't really sure what I was doing, or what is expected of me, or how to deal with different situations. Eventually I deactivated my listener account after spending two months trying to figure it all out, and then being bullied by some of the members. I truly hope things will change around here. I'd be more than willing to give it another try. 💖

Thank you for sharing your experience. I am so happy that you found a good mentor! I also can relate to that lost feeling. As a former educator, I feel that teaching invovles much more than just sharing links to relevent information. I also have had experiences with being bullied as a listener and I am sorry that you went through that. I completely understand why you deactivated your account. It is not your fault. I can sense that you still have a deep yearning to be involved and to be a listener. If only the environment at 7 cups provided the support that you need.

@BlindGrapefruit Hey! First, you will definitely not experience any retaliation for giving us your feedback - in fact I couldn't ask for anything different! If you do experience retaliation you should not hesitate to report that.

I agree, our listeners are so special and we love you/them for doing what you/they do. I try to listen when I can and can only begin to understand what it takes. I will take your suggestions here to heart and consider them. I will also share these comments with our community team - I wouldn't be surprised if they already this though :)

I hope you continue to give us feedback and I can only hope we're able to respond in a way that helps to make the whole community better and help more people.

I am not sure who to address this to, but I just took the Peer Training 1, and it knocked my socks off. I did not realize that this was listener training. WOW! This is something to look at and review often! I am very happy!
