Overuse of Alerts
With the update to the alert system, there has been an overload of alerts. Most of these have no relation to any teams, projects or subcommunities that I am involved in or have ever participated in before.
Events:
Events alerts seem to be the most common. The new joiner badge events, among those, every few days theres a new alert for a subcommunity promoting their event for the joiner badge.
Proposed solution: Make a masterpost which links to all the events main forum posts or having one alert which links to a subforum that has all event posted in it, similar to how the help wanted posts each month were done. I also think that they should be put up no more than twice a month.
Ice-breakers:
Ice-breaker alerts seem to be going up more and more often. As far as I was aware we were limiting these to once a day, but it seems as if I'm deleting 3 or 4 some days now.
Proposed solution: Have the alert only go out to those with the newbie badge and have a add/remove link at the bottom of the ice-breaker post for those who are no longer new listeners/members to be tagged each time if they want to be - with one last general alert which includes the add/remove link and clearly states that any listeners who want to be tagged in these posts should fill out the form to be added to the taglist.
Discussion Alerts:
Before the recent update to the alerts system, it had been discussed in various meetings about the overuse of alerts for discussions. As far as I was aware we had agreed to keep these to a minimum but I also see 3-4 of these per day, if not more.
Proposed solution: Have alerts going out to those who have subscribed or are part of the subcommunity that the room is connected to.
It would be great if updated guidelines on how the alerts should/will be used could be posted and possibly doing a survey to see what people do and dont want to see in alerts.

This is well thought out, and I agree!

Good post!
really, we get spammed with so much alerts and unwanted tags. we agreed on a policy for limiting those, but recently it has boosted and we get spammed of it again
YES!!! Alert spam drives me nuts and it is something I have flagged to the ambassador team, as well, to try to get us back to our prior agreed upon rules on not spamming people :)
Thank you for posting this, but also for being so thoughtful about proposed solutions in addition to the problems!
