April 6 - First Version of Member Email Verification!
Hi Community!
I can't believe this day is finally here! Yes, today, we will start asking members to verify their email addresses! Many of you have recomended this for many years and we are excited to share that the first version of this update will go live today!
Why are we verifying member email addresses?
- More accountability
- Reduce spam
- Make the gate around 7 Cups a little stronger
- Increase overall site safety
How will it work?
1. When a new member signs up, a confirmation email is auto-sent on new account creation
2. New members will not be able to upload a profile picture till they verify their email, but they will still be able to use all other elements of the site.
3. If you have not confirmed within 48 hours you get a yellow banner at the top of your dashboard reminding you to confirm (see example below).
Once clicked, this pop-up will appear -
4. The confirmation link has the following conditions:
a. Confirmation link is good = send you to the member dashboard, where you will see "email confirmed" in green at the top.
b. Confirmation link is bad or too old = tells you to re-request confirmation
To start, the only privilege we will limit is profile pictures. The goal is to test this out and then start locking more privileges behind the email verifciation. This is a phase one and we will continue to learn and hear your feedback.
How will this update interact with older members/ members not new today?
- All members will have the opportunity to verify their email address and we encourage them to do so.
- The yellow banner will appear inviting you verify

everytine I click to verify it never sends an email
thank you for this! I hope that this will help to reduce trolls who keep creating new accounts to bypass mutes or just to be troublemakers :) as well as the spams in the forums

Amazing work, really pleased, also am also pleased with all the contributions on this thread, coming at it from different angles with different suggestions, all really good food for thought!
Can I suggest a reward for the current members that -do- decide to verify email address? Not a reward that would be taking something significant away from members if they decided they'd rather not verify, because reasons are personal and valid too. Maybe a discreet "star" sticker next to their name in chatrooms / forum.. Or a room that only verified members can access. Something like that? (Something to encourage the current members but with something silly/fun, nothing important or forceful).

Also thinking a chatroom room for verified-only is almost like a "safe-haven" for those who have had repeated negative experiences from people with unverified accounts/multiple accounts/troll victims, or those particularly sensitive, or those with trust issues / paranoia, or even someone just seeking a bit of relief in the midst of being harrassed, without having to go into 1-1 chats or exit site.

Hi all,
Just had problems verifying email for Safari browser on Mac OS, currently using Adblock and possibly Social Media block extension (but maybe not that one).
A quick switch to Google Chrome with minimal extensions allowed me to verify email.

I didn't have any problems with verifying my email. I use Microsoft's Outlook.
I need some help finding place to relocate I took care of my mom she's 97 most places around here have a three to four I've been searching for over a month now and we only found one location and they require a cosigner and have no one to co-sign I was hoping you guys have some suggestions I really need
Very frustrating. I have tried for three days now to get a verification email sent to me. I am using Google chrome. Any suggestions?
